From what I read of the NYT article yesterday, it seems MM and/or Miramax are free to shop around for another distributor. And ABC News this evening reported that someone accused MM of creating this "story" to attract distributors, but that MM said that wasn't true, but that the phones have been ringing off the hook.

So I think another distributor will pick it up - just would have liked to hear MM say that himself...

but they can't stop it from being released. It sucks if they succeed from getting onto many screens, but if anything, Hollywood is consistently interested in a film with buzz, so someone will likely find a way to distribute it.
