Bush To Share His Feelings abotu "naked Iraqi prisoners"
OK, I just want us all to savor the weirdness that is our world just for a moment.

Our president, according to NPR, is going to give two interviews to the Arab media in which he will discuss his "feelings about photographs of naked Iraqi prisoners."

God, don't ANYONE let your mind go where mine went. I mean, really, I can just imagine him sitting there going, "Well, I mean, sure, some of those naked Iraqi prisoners are hot, but...it's still wrong what they did to them!"

Of course that's not what he means...but really, what can he say? "Wow, I'm sure sorry we got caug--er, that these unconscionable abuses took place. We'll make sure that next time nobody has a camer--I mean, that nobody mistreats Iraqi prisoners this way."

Sure, it was embarrassing when Clinton had to explain on national television about having sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky. But that is NOTHING compared to having to have our president explain his "feeligns about pictures of naked Iraqi prisoners."

@#$!,

1. He will discuss his "feelings about photographs of naked Iraqi prisoners."
Better call Pat Robertson on this one.

2. Very very weird
and may I take this opportunity to say what an outstanding column you posted today on the Stanford prison experiments and the Iraqi prisoner torture scandal. It is the most cogent commentary I have seen yet on this topic. Excellent work! :toast:

4. Thanks, Dudley
What a crazy fucking world we live in. Frankly the idea of Bush giving an interview to the Arab media about anything terrifies me because 1) you know he can't talk for more than 10 minutes without doing himself an injury and 2) the Arab media will not try to make him look sane and rational like the U.S. media does.

Can't wait to see how they like the "brown skinned people" references.

Alas,

9. Unless he reads a very carefully scripted statement (which I doubt)
I guarantee that within 2 minutes (10 minutes is probably too generous) he will have lapsed into babbling mindlessly about how "brown skinned people deserve democracy". I was going to say I predict a total disaster, but that has already happened. This will just make the rubble bounce some more.

13. That's exactly how I feel
Why do I have a feeling Bush speaking to the Arab world will only make matters worse? Hmmmmmmmm.

3. the thing I thought was funny this morning on NPR
was that Rumsfeld said the acts were "unAmerican" ... you don't say... well the Arab world must be thinking the acts are pretty American seing that Americans did them.

5. Sorry Plaid Adder, was this an actual title in the news? I cannot
believe they had that as a heading. It is too weird.
On the other hand, do you think it is because they don't want to discuss the ones that were not only naked but sodomized, raped, killed, etc. etc. In other words, they want to limit the discussion to naked bodies not dead and tortured bodies.

6. It's from the NPR headlines
I haven't seen it written down anywhere but Bob Edwards pops up every once in a while and repeats it. I swear those are the actual words: he's going to discuss his "feelings about photographs of naked Iraqi prisoners" being tortured, etc.

The mind boggles,

10. Thanks for the article today, really on target and insightful.

It's just all psychology, too predictable, and the hypocrisy of the "this is not who we are" grates.

11. When I heard it this morning
my reaction is, "Shit, game over!" It's been a cake walk so far in comparison to how it's going to be once * opens his pie hole.

Words get lost in translation all the time. * can't even speak well in his native tongue...

sigh...

12. bush* is pissed that the photos got out, he's not upset about torturing

sexual abuse and KILLING POWs....

I noticed that several times in the pentagoon briefing yesterday and other remarks from high level bush* officials....

they all state that they are angry about the PHOTOS, but don't say much about the VICTIMS.....

"I am not happy about that" (bush*...alwasys focussed on himself, never on those who suffer under his direction and leadership)

14. Can't you just visualize
the mock sincerity and the empty, sputtering platitudes, the conscious effort to repress the smirking reflex, the vacant gaze, the inappropriate excuses and bumbling dismissals, the lies?

15. Your article today
is the most thoughtful analysis I have seen anywhere. Reading about the Milgram experiment was a defining point in shaping my core beliefs and perspective; the prison experiments were no surprise after that, but a powerful reinforcement.

The attempts at minimizing these crimes across the mainstream media, including NPR, are dangerous as well as despicable. I hope everyone will counter that "bad apple" spin in as many ways as we can; phone calls, letters, protests. Torture, abuse, murdering babies - all an inevitable result of the situation we created there.
