MICAH WRIGHT: "I WAS NEVER AN ARMY RANGER"

On his Delphi forum, Micah Wright has posted a confession – he never was an Army Ranger, something he had claimed since shortly after his debut as a comics writer, as well as the author of remixed Propaganda, a book which lampooned World War II-era American propaganda posters.

A version of statement had been on Wright's website since April 25th apparently, however, he opted to post it on his Delphi forum Saturday.

Wright began his statement (which has since been edited) with a recap of what he used to tout as his credentials, and then added: “Except that I was never an Army Ranger. I never served a day in a Ranger Regiment. I never went to Ranger School. The closest I ever got was Army ROTC.

“This entire Army Ranger thing is a stupid lie which has its roots back in college. When I was in the Army ROTC (and I really was, trust me), I met a lot of Rangers, and got to know some of these amazing men. They always impressed me with their inspired competence and their commitment to one another. Though I enjoyed my time in Army ROTC, I decided that eight years of military service was not for me and I left the program. That ended my involvement with the military. But once I was out of the Army ROTC program, there was a lingering impression among friends that I had been in the Regular Army.”

Wright went on to say that he began using the Army Ranger lie shortly after he began “remixing” the posters – something which brought him numerous death threats. “After posting the webpage saying that I was a former Ranger, the number of death threats dropped drastically. I still got hate mail, but it was now of a different sort, telling me that my opinion was idiotic or that I had been misled. My fellow Americans seemed to believe that if you had served in the military, this gave you leeway to say what you felt... but if you were NOT a veteran, God forbid you should think opposite of what everyone else thought. Did any of that justify my lie? No. But it made it easier to tell. Too easy.”

To call a fallen soldier a sap and an idiot for the crime of having the right wing media turn his death into a propaganda event. That and the fact that I never heard of Micah Wright. What he did is kind of sleazy though.

I got mixed feelings, Kheph. It's one thing to depict The Chimp as a pointy-toothed Generalissimo, but his commentary about Tillman was, shall we just say, less than uplifting?

Wright is just one of those dumbasses we all knew who cooked-up a lot of bullshit just to get laid. I wonder what the thought process was? Something like "Hey, if I start passing myself off as a Ranger, maybe these fuckers will lay off and I can go back to responding to these penis enlargement ads..."

I'm not even outraged at Rall. I'm feeling more like I do when I hear someone say (loudly) "So what's the BIG DEAL?? They call THEMSELVES N******, don't they? Why can't I???" You know, that involuntary cringe?

because I'm an American who doesn't follow football, that I've missed something. I understand he left a million $ contract to fight the war.

I fully wish his family the best.

My pause comes from knowing about all the families that have no one to provide, as the National Guard was never supposed to serve terms as long as they are.

Rall is an artist. Art is supposed to provoke debate. I don't agree with him all of the time, but...he has walked in lands that I don't have the balls to go.

I don't understand those who are saying "Geez, left a big-buck carreer to go get killed...DUMBASS!" But then, I don't relate to NBA, NFL, NASCAR, CART, USAC fans anyway.

And Art IS supposed to piss one off. Exhibit One: Maplethorpe. Now THERE'S a guy who knew how to piss people off.

And I heard tonight that Rumsferatu is gleefully informing those "One Weekend A Month" folk who haven't gone yet that they're gonna be gone for a year (at LEAST). Could a Governor get away with saying "You can't have 'em. I need my Guardsmen here at home for tornado season..."

Prolly not. Secretary of War trumps a Governor any day, i'd guess.

That's what really irritates me about Rall's cartoon...he has Tillman at the recruitment office saying "when do I get to kill Arabs?". Just really beneath contempt.
