Seriously, how stupid is Sen. Biden?
Edited on Mon May-03-04 09:33 AM by placton
"Everybody understands the phenomenal damage this accusation has caused in that part of the world," Biden, the senior Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said on Fox News Sunday. "This is the single most significant undermining act that's occurred in a decade in that region of the world, in terms of our standing." This regarding US torture of prisoners, disclosed by pictures etc.

So, BushAttacksIraq was a mere bagatelle, and did no real damage to our standing? Nor did the lies about WMD? Or the treatment of the bodies of Hussein's sons? Or the killing of about 10,000 innocent Iraqis? And so forth.

Lord, is this man a fool or what?

3. Used to be a fan...
Not any more.

Calling for more troops and this gung ho attitude he's been pushing is pure BS.

His performance on last Sunday's George Strepocockolis show was abominable...if anyone saw that.

Kerry and other democrats must articulate how to achieve the "stability" in Iraq that he's calling for.

Bush got his regime change, now get the hell out. Turn it over to the guard...pull out the businesses...save the 5B a month and another 1000+ dead.

4. I don't think he's stupid at all.
Yes, the war most certainly undermined our credibility in the region and in the world, but the US torture of prisoners singularly undermines the only remaining justification the Bush Administration has - that Saddam was evil and we're so much better than he is and that we're going to make life so much better for Iraqis.

Bush was already proven wrong on WMDs.

Wrong on "nucular" programs.

Wrong on "imminent threat".

Wrong to start the war.

Wrong to have no exit strategy.

All he had left were the rape and torture rooms. These pictures and these incidents blow that out of the water. More importantly, the display of these pictures by news organizations places names and faces on our hypocrisy and bullshit and makes it MUCH more personal.

People can't grasp "10,000 dead Iraqis" for some bizarre reason. They CAN, however, grasp pictures of the atrocities performed by our soldiers. I'd argue that Biden is right and that this is an incredibly undermining event in terms of our already shaky credibility.

19. I don't like him either but!
I think he's right on this one too! This is going to "Mushroom" IMHO! Bush wanted Mushrooms now he's gonna' get it! The hate for Shrub this will cause worldwide is unimaginable! The hate even in America is Shrooming! The world ain't for a minute gonna' buy, that the CIA and the DOD didn't know what was happening! The fact that the DOD and CIA has private hit squads in Iraq rounding people up and torturing them is going to cook Bush's goose!

People around the world already hated Bush before this came to light! Bush's story is always the same as SGT. Shultz, "I knew nothing!" You and I don't believe Bush because he has already been caught up in lie after lie, even to his own people, so is the rest of the world going to again believe that bush didn't know! Should the American people elect a fool who NEVER KNOWS? It's his JOB to know, and if he don't know something is terribly WRONG! Bush might fool a few Freeper types(Rush & Wolf) because they want to be fooled and lied to, but the world's population ain't fooled!

Watch what happens in Iraq, these people are not supporting our troops! They are trying to get more of them killed!

20. And, right or wrong, Bush is going to get the blame for this.
Edited on Mon May-03-04 11:12 AM by boxster
Perhaps not here, but certainly in the court of world opinion.

You're right - people around the world already hated him for his preemptive war and his arrogance. These events, while certainly not as important in the big picture as killing more than 10,000 Iraqis or starting a pointless war - have the potential to be more damaging than anything done up to this point.

Emotional issues are what get people worked up. The torture of human beings with names, faces, and families and the subsequent publication of cold, hard proof of those atrocities, is most certainly going to elicit an emotional response.

Hell, it even elicited an emotional (if insincere) response from Bush himself!

but I wouldn't want to be standing in the way of a mike and a TV camera if Joe knew it was there.

I just wish he would use his many, many press opportubities to better effect.

If Joe were not providing cover for this administration, his media visibility would be significantly reduced.

I find him to be rather pompous, and full of himself! He seems more interested in getting the attention of the camera than anything else...This is my opinion...Others have other opinions.

10. Believe it or not...
So, BushAttacksIraq was a mere bagatelle, and did no real damage to our standing? Nor did the lies about WMD? Or the treatment of the bodies of Hussein's sons? Or the killing of about 10,000 innocent Iraqis? And so forth.

... there are plenty of people who can justify all of this. "War is hell" and all that, and "the world is better off without Saddam."

This incident proves that some Americans are no better than Saddam, given the chance. Anyone here actually think they wouldn't have put one of their prisoners to death as an "example" to make the rest talk... if they could have gotten away with it?

Even the FReepers know in their little black hearts that this is not some aberration. Look at how hard they are trying to spin it all as some "frat prank," and so admitting that they don't want to see it as serious. If these photos got out, one can only imagine what else is going on that doesn't get out. Things that no one could possibly claim are just "frat pranks."

14. The man is a MAJOR embarrassment to the Democratic Party
AND the nation.

Supports the war, goes for $$BILLIONS for war toys, most of which the military doesn't even want, we kill at least 10,000 Iraqis most of whom just happened to live there and maim how many thousands more with his blessing...and he has the NERVE to say this is the worst thing?

Why doesn't he convene the Democrats on his committee to investigate the role MERCENARIES AND CIVILIAN CONTRACTORS are playing in Iraq, if he really wants to do something constructive? Naw, that would make sense...

15. While Senator Biden has disappointed in the past,
he totally reamed the Bushbots at the recent Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings on Iraq, and the statement you refer to is spot on.... why attack someone for saying the right thing? I don't understand.

I'll take my allies where I can find them.

18. Joe Biden is the smartest man in the Senate.
And, in a deliberative body containing Chuck Schumer, Jon Corzine and John Kerry, that's none too easy.

Biden's absolutely right. We may have killed Iraqi civilians, but these acts, while less violent, do a lot more to hurt American credibility.

21. In the long run -
the situation with the prisoners is far more dangerous than that in Fallujah or Najef. The Bush (mal)administration needs to be a little more than "disgusted" about this.
