So, you think you're lucky that your local NPR station carries "Newshour"?

Yeah, I thought so, too. My only complaint until this evening was that it wsn't on long enough. Gee, just an hour a day? That's all the "truth" we get?

Let me tell you, after what I heard today, I'm pissed as hell at Auntie Beeb.

I was listening to "The Interview", where Ritulah Shah was talking to Pat Gunn, a "Veteran of the US Navy" and mother of an injured soldier still serving in Iraq.

What I heard here was sad and disturbing, but when I got home and cranked up the shortwave rig, I happened across the interview that was intended for international consumption, not the watered-down version intended for NPR supporters...

The program was HEAVILY edited for content! After listening to the Worldservice feed, I learned that not only is Pat Gunn against the war, but so is her son and a lot of his comrades, too. Not only was he sent back into action with PTSD, but he is also worried that he may fail because of his illness, and cause a buddy to come to harm. The US version of the program didn't tell us that. Pat also said that we "have the wrong leaders" in this country. Didn't hear THAT over NPR, either....

Rove and Cheney's arms are long inded, if they can reach all the way to Bush House on the Strand and dictate editorial policy to the BBC...

2. I've always known the US BBC feeds were toned down a lot
sorry it makes you so upset, but most of us on this board don't depend on anything broadcast in the US for our news. That's one of the reasons I come here, to have all these extra "eyes" watching the world news and the headlines from around the world.

I always told my husband when he would ask why do I watch so many different news shows, "I figure if I watch all the outlets, I will find the truth somewhere in the middle."

What is unfortunate now is that with the consolidation of the US media this ploy no longer works, and it is hard work ferreting out the truth.

So thanks for my DU pals for their sharp eyes and I throw in my finds when I can.

4. Well, this was an eye-opener for me, for sure...
Call me naive, but I had always considered the Beeb as the "untouchables" of news.

I only watch one US news net. They all parrot the same blast-faxes and Talking Points, i figure if you watch one, you've watched them all. Print media is just as bad.

That's why I've relied on Shortwave and Internet. And Shortwave has always meant the BBC.
Guess it's time to start listening to Radio Habana...

8. see if you can get Democracy Now! in your area
www.democracynow.org

also check into http://www.independent-media.tv/index.cfm

these are both good sites for "under reported" news

11. Used to listen when RFPI was on the air.
Radio For Peace International showed everyone else what happens to an "international" broadcaster when you piss-off Karl and Poppy...

They shake-up your sponsoring organization and put a Wingnut in charge. Then you're locked out of your station....

3. Somehow, I'm not surprised though
Just out of curiosity...was there a difference in the length of time that the Newshour segment vs. Internation segment runs?

It's no wonder that most of the rest of the world has a negative opinion of the assholes in the WH. I don't think they have transferred that to the American people...yet. But if we don't vote them out, they will blame us.

And worst of all, the media is allowing it to happen and it's hurting the country egregiously.

5. Not sure of the total time...
Since I didn't listen to the whole "Newshour" broadcast, but in the segment called "The Interview", there was quit a bit chopped out of the US-distributed segment. Not sure what they added to "pad" out Newshour.

6. Hi, fellow shortwaver! The BBC analysis programs are incredible...
Edited on Sat May-01-04 11:15 PM by Gloria
and my favorite show is "Talking Point" on Sunday morning here in MT.

They are all on the BBC.com site. Just click on "Radio" at the top and
you can listen live or go to the archives and select from the list for the recent shows.

Radio Netherlands is also excellent and Radio Havana is a good listen, also.

I don't bother to listen to local AM radio anymore. It's strictly shortwave for me.

And, by doing the World Media Watch, I find out stuff either well in advance of what's broadcast here, more detailed reports, and stuff never reported here at all.....

10. Hi Gloria, still using the $12 Bell and Howell receiver?
I wouldn't be shocked to hear that you've upgraded to Grundig Satellite 800 by now...

Latest insanity here is the
DRM experiments. Digital Radio, on shortwave. Mind-blowing!

14. They are still better than the commercial stations by far. Since...
...I just copy-pasted this story for a different post I'll copy it below. Listen to the clip and note how different the story was reported on NPR as opposed to other media.

Go to http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1846269 for a short but interesting audio clip. Click on "All Things Considered audio" and you can listen in RealAudio or Windows Media.

Document: Oklahoma City Bombing Was Taped
By JOHN SOLOMON, Associated Press Writer
Mon Apr 19, 6:59 PM ET

WASHINGTON - A Secret Service document written shortly after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing described security video footage of the attack and witness testimony that suggested Timothy McVeigh (news - web sites) may have had accomplices at the scene.

"Security video tapes from the area show the truck detonation 3 minutes and 6 seconds after the suspects exited the truck," the Secret Service reported six days after the attack on a log of agents' activities and evidence in the Oklahoma investigation.

*SNIP*

An entry a day earlier on the same log reported that the security video was consistent with a witness' account that he saw McVeigh's getaway car in the lead before a woman guided the truck to its final parking spot in front of the Murrah building.

"A witness to the explosion named Grossman claimed to have seen a pale yellow Mercury car with a Ryder truck behind it pulling up to the federal building," the log said. The witness "further claimed to have seen a woman on the corner waving to the truck."

A Secret Service agent named McNally "noted that this fact is significant due to the fact that the security video shows the Ryder truck pulling up to the Federal Building and then pausing (7 to 10 seconds) before resuming into the slot in front of the building," the log said. "It is speculated that the woman was signaling the truck when a slot became available."

17. I was watching Newsworld Internationl
interviewing some leader (could have been Algeria) and he started talking about how the US misjudged the Baath Party and was now turning to them on some level (with the Iraqi General in Fallujah) and was going into more detail when the screen went blank and stayed blank (no sound either) until the interview was over. It made me suspicious at the timing of it.
