The why behind the Sinclair and the rights objection to the names
Republicans learn. They learned from Vietnam that if you do not keep the public upbeat about a war you will not win it despite superior arms. Thus if you wish to drag the people into a conflict for less than manditory reasons you are going to have to fight two battles. One against your chosen enemy and the second against the publics perception of the conflict.
Ever since Nixon and Vietnam the right has been fine tuning their machine. Lesson one on warfare was you minimize the exposure to the pain and suffering of our troops to the citizenry.
With the first Gulf war they learned even more lessons. Even if your point is to impress on the world your might, the repeated demonstration of your munitions killing people will have an effect on public reaction. Keep the awareness of the toll on the enemy covered too. Never refer to the victims in the country you are invading in any term that would suggest they were defending their country. And as always cast them in the most dehumanizing light possible.
The recognition of those who gave their life to their nation is the slightest honor we can give them. They did not choose the war. They chose to serve their country and put their life on the line should it be necissary. There is no dishonor in their actions. It is Bush and his cronies that dishonor their memory in every possible way including trying to hide their ulitimate sacrifice to We The People.
We can never hid our eyes from the horrors of war. War can only be the absolute and last resort. The destruction it unleashes demands that we be absolutely certain of the course. The terrible cost of war demands that we look at the them and recognise their sacrifice and balance that against what we hope to achieve. If the balance cannot be made then the war is not justified.
