Your assistance requested re: Santorum & lobbyists
I find that as I'm getting older my memory isn't as sharp as it once was. I'm trying to write a LTTE re: E.J Dionne, Jr.'s column in today's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (and which I intend to post here for your comments). I recall that in the recent past there was a flap about Sen. Rick (the dick) Santorum influencing (the selection of??)lobbyists so that it's guaranteed that they are part and parcel of the conservative right. Would someone please fill me in on the details? I cannot remember much about this story.

2. Here's a link
Santorum's latest attempt to boost the GOP's profile on K Street is part of a continuing philosophical battle that has raged in Washington since the Republican revolution of 1994.

"My perspective is, we want to have people at associations who will be receptive to our message and be fair to our proposals," Santorum said in an interview. "I'm just looking for some fair treatment."

Following their capture of the House after 40 years out of power, top Republicans, including former Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and Majority Whip Tom DeLay of Texas, embarked on the "K Street Strategy," a high-profile attempt to pressure corporate America to hire GOP lobbyists as well as donate more money to Republican candidates and incumbents.

Every Tuesday morning, Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., meets with a couple dozen Republican lobbyists. Here is how Nicholas Confessore describes the ritual in the July/August Washington Monthly:

he lobbyists present pass around a list of the jobs available and discuss whom to support. Santorum's responsibility is to make sure each one is filled by a loyal Republican—a senator's chief of staff, for instance, or a top White House aide, or another lobbyist whose reliability has been demonstrated. After Santorum settles on a candidate, the lobbyists present make sure it is known whom the Republican leadership favors. </snip>
