Black caucus hopes to persuade Nader to quit race
WASHINGTON - The Congressional Black Caucus hopes to arrange a meeting soon with Ralph Nader to try to persuade him to abandon his independent run for the White House, the caucus' chairman told the National Press Club yesterday.

"We are very much concerned about Ralph Nader," said Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, a Baltimore Democrat. "The fact is that we are worried that he will take votes away from our Democratic" candidate, Sen. John Kerry.

Cummings said that New York Rep. Charles B. Rangel, one of the 39 Democrats who make up the caucus, had asked him to set up a meeting with Nader. Kevin Zeese, a Nader spokesman, said the campaign had not received the request.

Nader has maintained that he will not withdraw his candidacy, saying that would disappoint those voters he is asking for support. But he has yet to qualify for any state ballot.

1. What does Nader care?
The CBC and their constituents know the stakes in this election. They will be the ones who have to suffer the consequences of a second Bush term, not Nader and his coterie of latte-sipping, sushi eating, bourgeoisie supporters.

It's not like he has ever given a damn for black civil rights.

3. I sure hope they can get through to him--no one else has been able to.
I would never have thought it, but his supporters seem to be stubbornly hanging with him, and it is showing in the polling numbers.

That said, I think in the upcoming days and weeks, Kerry's lead is going to expand to the point that Ralph's 2-4% won't make a difference.

5. Heard a personal-life rumor yesterday from a Nader associate...
from the early years, that would sicken anyone, if found to be true. If this man is going to have a crucial effect on this election, let's see some serious press scrutiny, including the kind of personal-life scrutiny other candidates are subject to.

6. Strong-arm tactics worthy of the Republican Party
"We are very much concerned about Ralph Nader," said Rep. Elijah E.
Cummings, a Baltimore Democrat. "The fact is that we are worried that
he will take votes away from our Democratic" candidate, Sen. John
Kerry."

Instead of feeding Ralph's already inflated ego, maybe they should invest their energies in finding out what exactly John Kerry lacks as a candidate that is making Nader attractive.

I guess they would rather narrow the choice and essentially strong-arm folks into voting for their candidate. It will backfire.
