Sen. Lautenberg Rips Chickenhawk Cheney
Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 02:15 PM by Jack_Dawson
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/04/28/lautenberg.kerry/index.html

In a scathing speech on the Senate floor, Lautenberg, D-New Jersey, said that he did not think politicians should be judged by whether they had military service but added that "when those who didn't serve attack the heroism of those who did, I find it particularly offensive."

"The lead chickenhawk against Sen. Kerry the vice president of the United States, Vice President Cheney," Lautenberg said. "He was in Missouri this week claiming that Sen. Kerry was not up to the job of protecting this nation. What nerve. Where was Dick Cheney when that war was going on?"

Everyone write him and thank him!!! Long overdue. The fucking gall of the chickenhawk repukes is off the charts.

2. Great line.
"The mission accomplished was to get a picture that could be used in an election campaign," Lautenberg said.

My comment: McCain is a disgrace.

5. What guts!
If only ALL of our Democratic senators would get a spine like Senator Lautenberg's . . . we'd have 90% of the vote in this country.

6. Hallelujah!!
Well said!

I hate to say it, but it shows that the media moguls have no choice but to cover it when we stoop to their level and fight back. Hopefully others will follow suit.

7. POS R- shill McCain sez:
"At least could we declare that the Vietnam War is over and have a cease-fire and agree that both candidates -- the president of the United States and Sen. Kerry served honorably -- end of story? Now let's focus our attention on the conflict that's taking place in Iraq, that is taking American lives as I speak on this floor," he said.

That way, we R's can keep talking about what a great "war president" * is while neutralizing Kerry's service and history as a war hero in 'Nam.

Fuck you, a-hole!

14. No Sen McCain, * did NOT serve honorably...THAT'S THE POINT!!!!
..as a moderate repub McCain is tolerable..but this attmept to equate Kerry's service with Lt AWOL is just plain wrong....

Kerry received medals for bravery, * was awarded NOTHING because he ran and hid.....

If you pull it you'd best be ready to use it DICK..and that goes for the rest of the chickenhawks that so willingly send others to die in their place...and then strut around like preening peacocks....

The depths of my contempt for republicans in general, and this administration specifically increases DAILY......:grr:

8. It's about time the Dems came to the defense of their own.
This should be done on every count all over the country. As soon as the Bush attack machine (Hughes, Cheney, Kristol, etc.) comes out with a statement, an ad--wherever it is--some Dem in the public shpere should step up and challenge it and defend their fellow Dem...this just doesn't apply to Kerry. the only way to get the truth out and circumvent the FOX propaganda is to stay in the news locally as well as nationally. If you have to be negative or scandolous to do it DO IT!!!

15. Oh, *now* the Vietnam war is over because they can't use
Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 02:19 PM by SemperEadem
Kerry's record against him? Well, the war was just fine for Refuq's to use when it suited their purpose. McCain is now defining the course of the discussion? Another hall-monitor-mommy at work.

I think the point needs to be hammered home that Cheney had "other priorities" than to serve his country... gee, can our sons use that same rhetoric too to get out of the draft they're going to put in place? If it's plausible enough for the Vice President who took advantage of it, to use, why not everyone else? Is he saying that his life is more important than others?

Just what priorities, exactly, did he have to attend to?

And word to McCain: Bush going AWOL is not honorable service to his country.

He's direct, he's to the point, and he speaks forcefully. Kind of the exact opposite of Daschle...

19. Email Frank and let him know...
that we appreciate a little spine in the Dems..

this is a street fight and about time everyone wakes up to that fact. Bi-partisanship went out the window with Limbaugh, Gingrich, Clinton's impeachment in the house and was completely destroyed in the 2000 election. The neo-con wing of the repugs destroyed it while the Dems sat back in stunned silence. They started this fight in the early 90's and, just like the true cowards they are, will whine and moan when the blows come their way.

FUCK THEM

21. I wrote him
I thanked him for his defense of Kerry and I told him that comments like this from Cheney et al show their lack of support for the troops in Iraq. While in harm's way, the administration is making it clear to the troops that service doesn't count and isn't respected, only party affiliation and unquestioning support of the current administration and its policies.

24. I saw that on the Senate
floor today. Lautenberg was great! The chickenhawk poster was superb. The chicken was dressed in a military jacket and medals. And on the side of the poster was the definition of a chickenhawk, just like it came from the dictionary. Senator Lautenberg said he got the definition from the internet. I just couldn't believe my eyes and ears. I've been laughing about it all day.

Then Senator Harry Reid said to Senator McCain, after McCain was through, something like I feel like a little boy in the schoolyard, but they started it. LOL LOL

He appears to be really calm and composed, but boy don't get him riled up! I still remember his marathon filibuster where he read from his book for hours upon hours.

26. Good Lord that man was on fire!

"We know who the chicken hawks are. They talk tough on national defense and military issues and cast aspersions on others," he said. "When it was their turn to serve where were they? AWOL, that's where they were."

Lautenberg pointed to a poster with a drawing of a chicken in a military uniform defining a chickenhawk as "a person enthusiastic about war, provided someone else fights it."

"They shriek like a hawk, but they have the backbone of the chicken," he said.

My sentiments exactly!
