the Southland, in Bush country, watching this campaign unfold. Like anyone who has a grain of political intelligence, I realize that this election is the most important in decades. It may be the most important in American history because of the people who have taken over our government.
Having said that, I would like to give you some advice based on what I am hearing from the average person and what I am seeing on television.
First of all, you look like a President, and you sound like a President. That is good and that is bad. I think the American people do want someone who will represent them well, someone who can string together a few sentences. I think people want a person who can perform the ministerial functions of a President and not embarrass the country. And there is no doubt you will be able to do that well. However, I must tell you that your Presidential persona also works against you. And that is because you are dealing with a bunch of thugs, hoods, nihilists, if you will, who want to level this campaign to a streetfight. You must be prepared to fight these people on their level. Your response today in which you raised Bush's military record was masterful. You must keep that up. Go for the jugular on this.
Secondly, you need to have some talking points that you an access quickly and easily. Here are the points that matter to people, at least from what I have heard and seen, in no certain order.
1. The economy and the loss of jobs.
2. The loss of the surplus in the treasury.
3. The environment. Glaciers are melting. Hell, say it. Glaciers are melting; the Smoky Mountains are dying. Say that. Tell people that global warming is not a myth, as the Republicans want us to believe. Tell the people you will do something about it.
4. It is time to re engineer energy in this country. Point out that Reagan scuttled Carter's energy policy. Had we invested in alternative energy the last twenty years, where would we be now? Tell the nation that we have the finest technological minds in the entire world. It is TIME that we do something different, and that the government will be working with our technological universities and colleges to develop new forms of energy.
5. On Iraq, people want the UN involved. People do not want their billions of tax dollars going for this war. Tell the people that Bush has cut VA benefits. Ask them why our soldiers have to buy their own flak jackets while Halliburton is getting no bid contracts.
6. Attack Bush for having Cheney with him when he testifies in front of the 9/11 Commission.
7. Tell the people we are the only developed country in the world without a decent health policy. Tell the people that people in this country deserve to have a health care plan and you are going to see that they get it.
8. Ask the people if they are better off today than four years ago.
9. Tell the nation that if you are President, you will make sure that you appoint people to the Supreme Court who have the integrity to recuse themselves from cases in which they are conflicted out. You will not appoint judges who have so little integrity that they go hunting with parties in cases which appear in their courts.
10. Tell them that you will have to spend a great deal of time repairing the prestige of the United States that has been damaged by this President. Tell them it will take time, but you can do it. That the US is part of the world community and we must act this way.
Anyway, Senator Kerry, those are few of my thoughts. Remember, most of all, that these are thugs who wrap themselves in the mantle of religion. You must be like the prophets of old who would come in from the country to Jerusalem and preach to the court prophets. You must be courageous. Take the fight to them. If you don't, you will lose.
