Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle Vetoes Reagan Highway...Bwwwhaaa!
Gov. Jim Doyle has vetoed a bill that would have designated U.S. 14 from the Illinois border to Madison as the Ronald Reagan Highway.

Doyle said he vetoed the bill Wednesday because it would violate the precedent of only Wisconsin-born citizens or state residents having the honor of a state highway or bridge named after them.

But state Sen. Bob Welch, R-Redgranite, who authored the bill with fellow conservative Rep. Scott Suder, R-Abbotsford, called the governor's decision "partisan and very petty."

"Ronald Reagan was one of our greatest presidents. We have a chance to join a lot of other states in honoring him. We do that for other great people," Welch said this morning.

14. Reminds me of a story in Michigan...
In John Engler's last couple years as Governor, someone in GOP ranks suggested that they rename the Detroit Airport after Engler. "There's going to be sonething named after him anyways."

A Democratic operative replied, "How about the John M. Engler Lake St. Clair Sewage Discharge?"

6. I can envision that highway
It doesn't know where it came from, meanders into a swamp, and emerges somewhere in the middle of a desert. Let's make it a toll road.

8. What is the web site that has the Reagan by county
The cons who want Reagan honored in every county in the country? He can be honored in my county (Bergen County New Jersey) anytime. We can name the mighty Passaic River after him, which is 1 part river and five parts sewage and other fine stew. What better to symbolize his commitment to the environment?

10. Welch is an idiot

He noted that cities in Wisconsin, including Madison, have plenty of streets named after former national leaders.

Madison's isthmus has it's streets named after all the signers of the Constitution, ya twit. It's not just some random group of dead white guys. The rest are named after neighborhood 'themes', 'the birds', 'the gems', 'the states', 'the poets', etc...

I bet he picked Hwy 14 because it heads right into Madison. Oh yeah. Madisonians would just LOVE to talk about taking 'the Ronald Reagan Highway'. As an isthmus-dweller, I take personal offense. :grr:

Thanks again to Jim Doyle! He was one of the few keepers of the flame as State Attorney General during the dark Thompson years.

12. As a former Madisonian...
I take personal offense as well. How dare they try to label a highway into that beautiful city with the name Reagan.

11. About time someone stood up to Reagan love fest.
We need objectivity...Any history book will recant
how Reagan had more scandals and forced resignations
over conflicts of interest than any presidency since
Warren Harding.
These lying right wing wackos' want to hypotize
the American psyche with lies. Heck, it is not a wonder
they re-name Washington D.C. after the Prez. of sleeze.
Heck, if not for Reagan how would Dubya had found his
ex-cons to appoint.
Part of the problems starts with us...We need give
people such as Doyle our help-petitions or whatever;
commending him for his veto.
If we don't do our work, then you will see Reagan's
face on the FDR dime or the $20 bill. Maybe both.
We should not be slanderous in our attacks on the
old geezer.. Just remind the present freepers
of the truth.

No need to motivate the other side. Let Reagan have his airport, highways, parking lots, et al. It has gone too far when they decide to rename a major city (maybe LA where Reagan is from) Reagangrade! Or if they rename the Wilson bridge, the Reagan bridge.

15. Good news...
I'm still pissed that they started calling the Florida Turnpike the "Ronald Reagan Turnpike."

Please...someone, anyone tell me what the hell that senile old bastard did to warrant such adoration?
