Was Tillman another John Kerry?
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 11:29 AM by hexola
Tillman could have been a presidental contender. Some of his teamates even mention this.

Was he the same sort of over-achiever that Kerry is portryed as? Sacrafice and Service. The only differece is the shrapnel that hit Tillman - hit home.

1. I doubt Tilman would have testified in front of Congress.
He shunned the limelight.

4. Hmm - he played for the NFL - thats pretty much the limelight!
I know what you mean though -

On the flipside, Kerry was not in the limelight when he made he decicision to enlist.

2. I was thinking the same thing
Kerry and Tillman were both smart and made good grades. Both had money. Yet both served their country. Kerry was wounded three times and lived. Tillman was wounded once and died.

I think Tillman could have followed in Kerry's footsteps.

3. Presidential contender??
I think that's a little overboard. I doubt anyone who wasn't an Arizona Cardinals fan ever heard of the guy before Friday. Hell, the guy was stationed at Fort Lewis and apparently living 30 miles away from me before he shipped out and I never heard a thing about it.

Don't get me wrong, I respect the Hell out of what the guy did - even though I now believe Bush lied about his motives in Afghanistan - but even if Tillman had survived his tour of duty, I doubt he would have gained any long term fame from it. Of course, I wouldn't have known that Kerry was a minor celebrity after his return from Vietnam if the right wing media wasn't constantly reminding me.

5. If he ran as a Dem, he would not be a hero...just in the wrong place
at the wrong time.

6. Juan Williams made that comparison this morning
Fred Barnes said it was a rare person of privilege that would put his life on the line like he did. Williams said, isn't Kerry that type of person? Barnes and the panel immediately started making huffing noises, Barnes said, I don't think Tillman's family thinks that.

I said to myself, how would Fred know what Tillman's family thinks?

7. They're both hero's but there are big differences between them
I think Tillman can be seen by me at least as a little more honorable. He shunned any media attention toward his exceptional act. Where as Kerry's act of being a rich kid joining was more common than what Tillman did, and he did draw media attention at least when he got back.

Tillman was also a little more of a straight talker to me at least. I can't imagine Kerry ever saying something like "I've never done a damn thing" before he joined. Kerry was more spoiled than Tillman as a kid but Kerry really till today downplays his priviledge(sp?) and wealth.

8. Kerry, Yale. Pat Tillman, ASU
I've never heard this joke with a Yale graduate as the punchline.

Three buddies go on vacation in Mexico to buy pot and soon run afoul of the law. The Mexican court sentences all three to death in the electric chair.

When asked for any last words the first American guy says, "I have a degree in divinity from Harvard, and can definitely say that should you throw the switch for this electric chair I will not die!"

The jailers throws the electric chair switch and nothing happens. So the Mexican authorities let the first American guy go.

The second guy says, when strapped in the chair,"I have a degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago, and can definitely say that should you throw that switch I will not die!"

The jailer again throws the switch to the electric chair, and again nothing happens. The second American's set free.

The third guy says from the electric chair, "I have a degree from Arizona State in electrical engineering. And I can see from here that if you'd tightened that wire nut this chair'd have current!"
