However maddening she can be, Dowd gets a lot of credit for being the first major pundit to break the taboo after 9/11 against criticizing Bush. What's amazing about this column is that she does a frontal assault on one flank, without doing her usual "liberal", NY Times two-step of adding "but the other side does it to."

Dear Maureen Dowd,

Thank you for your keen observations in "The Orwellian Olsens" (Op Ed NYT 4.25.04). I have only two comments.

One is that "Bushworld" is not a joking matter. Bush and his PNAC coconspirators are intentionally driving this nation and the world toward all-out war in the Middle East. They are intentionally destroying this country and the Constitution. They've already done significant damage and will do considerably more if we do not stop them. This is not the least bit humorous, it is a life and death serious matter.

Second, I blame the news media, primarily television news, for handing this country over to and continuing to empower this Cabal of neoconservative faux fundamentalist freaks. We will be paying for this nightmare with our tax dollars and our children's blood for YEARS to come.

We need more hard hitting articles like yours--and we need real reportage that does not gloss over the inevitable consequences of this maladministration's policies.
