THREE HUNDRED & FIFTY DOLLARS A GALLON

ICE CREAM
Double scoop of trouble

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rising cost of ingredients forcing ice cream firms to raise prices

By LISA HAARLANDER
News Business Reporter
4/19/2004

Taking the family out for ice cream will get slightly more expensive because of a cyclone wiping out a vanilla crop in Madagascar and rising milk and butter fat prices.
It's a double scoop of trouble for ice cream makers who have seen the cost of their mixes double in the last six months.

"What we're doing is focusing on processing and productivity improvements, and trying to reduce waste internally," said Robert Denning, president and CEO and Perry's Ice Cream in Akron. "But given the magnitude of these increases, after absorbing them for six months, we've had to pass on a small price increase."

A half gallon will go up 30 cents to $5.29.

SNIP.....

Haven't bought any in a lonnnnnnnng time :)

I did pay $8.00 for a vanilla bean when I was in Tahiti.. We stopped at a vanilla "farm", and they were selling them in glass vials , so I bought one for my daughter-in-law :)

7. Time for Pacific vanilla to take up the slack
Tahitian vanilla is fairly well known. I mean, c'mon, Frasier Crane uses a little of it in his bath mix :-)

There is now also a Hawai'i vanilla producer, on the "Big Island" of Hawai'i.

10. You need a reason to go again?
Sheesh, I haven't even been, and I'm "only" six hours away. I have to settle for our charming part-Tahitienne volunteer here at the office, I guess.

11. You should GO.... Moorea is heaven on earth..
beautiful people, beautiful scenery,(probably like Hawaii), but very foreign and lovely...

It's probably like Hawaii was back in the 50's.. There is only one road 36 miles around the island.. Transporation is cheap..everyone hitches rides on the "yellow bus" $4.00 anywhere on the island.. and the ferry rides to Papeete are only $12.00 ..

You should do it..:)

9. that sounds about right
Pure vanilla essential oil (essential oil is used in aromatherapy)is extremely expensive... that's why synthetics are used so widely.
