TV viewer sues for blasphemy
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,9341342%255E2862,00.html

"AN evangelical Christian has started legal action against Channel 7 over the use of the name "Jesus Christ" as a swear word in a top crime thriller.

Andre van der Linden claims the use of the name in the British-made series Prime Suspect is insulting and disrespectful to Christians.

"After years of raising my voice in protest, it seems abundantly clear to me that Christian believers are the most vilified group in this nation," he says in his formal complaint."

-------------------

If I cry out "Oh God!" during a particularly vigorous session of adult situation-related activity, am I praising His name or opening myself (so to speak) to litigation?

15. No chance on blasphemous grounds
We don't even have a national religion as many countries do so I don't see how a blasphemy charge could wash.

Whenever these fundies have an axe to grind, they always cry "discrimination".

3. What a crock of excrement.
So this jerk really thinks that Christian believers are the most vilified group in this nation

Has a former president ever said that your religious group "shouldn't be considered citizens", buddy?

If not, then STFU.

Their religion is on our money, in our pledge, on virtually every government document (In the Year of our Lard), and practically every politician panders to their beliefs. ("God bless America")

Vilified, my pasty-white ass.

he should try being, oh, let's see, i don't know, maybe ANY OTHER RELIGION and see if he's any more vilified.

or maybe he should try being black or gay (now how is it that i'm so sure he's neither?)

sheesh, some people just can't accept mere preferential treatment.

5. Tip of the iceberg....

Now that the FCC has opened the floodgates. As an aside, I'm still pretty shocked when I hear "goddamn" on TV. I'm 40, and didn't grow up with TV broadcasting "real" curse words.

6. ya know
i'm a christian, but guys like this one really make me want to hide my beliefs. if this guy feels that he's being persecuted for his religion, i think he needs to pick up a history book (or 2 or 3) and read about the days when the scoreboard at the Roman Colisseum read "Lions 7, Christians 0."

8. About the "believers are the most vilified group in this nation" line,
I went to Roman Catholic school for 8 years, and what I heard, over and over, was "We're the victims of society. We're being oppressed..." Not to say that Catholics are never or have never been oppressed, but jeez! (Oh dear, that's short for "Jesus"). Poor, poor Andre. :eyes:

10. I do find it odd
That when people use "God damn" on TV, they bleep the "God" part of it.

11. Just another nutter wanting publicity....
I doubt he has a chance, even under our (australia's) racial and religious vilification laws. All I can say is, we have our share of nutcases too :)

Or for the "news" dept that broadcasts entertainment and propganda instead of the information needed for the US to function as a democracy.
