Seems like a pretty cool woman and is urging CT Gov. John Rowland not to veto the millionaire's tax. I like her reference to Bush's permanently dropping the estate tax as "past the crazy zone."
Heiress Urges Higher Taxes
Millionaire, Estate Levies Debated
April 20, 2004
By CHRISTOPHER KEATING, Capitol Bureau Chief
As legislative leaders and Gov. John G. Rowland move closer to a showdown over taxing the wealthy, one affluent state taxpayer is making her position clear:
Tracy Hewat doesn't mind paying taxes.
As heiress to a huge family fortune, Hewat is one of the relatively few taxpayers who would be affected by the proposed increases in Connecticut's inheritance tax. With the Democrat-controlled legislature poised to debate the so-called millionaires' tax and hike the inheritance tax as early as next week, Hewat has decided to step forward to say she supports increased taxes.
The reason, she says, is that the state needs millions of dollars annually for everything from upgrading libraries to plowing the snow in her rural Litchfield County town of West Cornwall.
