I will NEVER stop watching TV -- even cable -- news because...
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 06:30 AM by DeepModem Mom
like it or not, it's how most of America gets any news it gets, at least until a still-young Generation Y abandons tv for the net. (I also want to see real events on tv as they happen -- but I rely on print sources and DU links for actual news.) Fox is an exception -- just surfing past it raises my blood pressure -- but I watch the other networks, and pick up the phone and call them to give them hell on a very regular basis. If we don't let them know we're out here, we can expect even more of the same. Paul Krugman probably had little effect on Wolf Blitzer when he used a column to call him out about his innuendo re. Richard Clarke's personal life, but he called him on it anyway.

To close our eyes and ears, for example, to the fact that the revelations in the Woodward book are not reaching the American people in a way that helps them understand their significance is to live in a dream world we can't afford to live in.

1. Good point, Mom.
it's how most of America gets any news it gets. And that's the gateway to the soothing, reassuring opiate entitled:

If It's On The News It Must Be True.

Off with their talking heads anyway!

2. I gave up watching TV more than 20 years ago
and I don't miss it a bit. When I'm exposed to it at other people's homes, it fills me with horror and loathing. I much prefer getting my news from newspapers, magazines, NPR, and on the net...especially Democratic Underground.

4. That's exactly where I get my "real" news, as I indicated --
but I personally cannot ignore the media of television, which plays such an enormous, crucial role in our national life.

5. I used to feel that way
And I understand your point.

However, since I started to rely on the Internet for my news, I find that I am consistently waaaaay ahead of the mainstream press.

(I'll watch live events like the idiot's press conference and such so that I may judge them for myself. But otherwise, the Internet is more informative than any 22-minute TV news, and it is equivalent or ahead of print news as well.)

6. Agreed --
As I said, for real news, I rely on the print press (read with my own skeptical judgment), and DU internet links --

7. So does it all come down to nothing but entertainment?
It appears to me that cable news controls the atmosphere and the mentality of this country and also we have many citizens that have a hard time walking and chewing gum at the same time.

...and the main Sheep Herders are the folks in control of the country.

8. Entertainment is increasingly the goal of tv news --
and you're right, it's damaging to the country.
