I believe in evolution and I have studied a lot about the subject

so I learned that all species originated form the first bacteria or whatever and we are supposed to be the last step of this evolution.
my question is how that could be so as a practical matter, was there kind of branches that took different forms because of some genes mutations ?

They were adaptations to environment, so we're told. Started out as water dwelling critters, until crawling out.

And I'm not sure what your question is, but basically evolution works like this:
Life mutates, if the mutation increases the chances of successful reproduction (and therefore spreading of this new mutation), then it is likely that the mutation will be kept.
