Carter is getting the votes here because most people here are too young to remember Ike.

Some would even argue that it helped defeat Carter in '80. Carter was telling people that the problems we faced had to be dealt with by all of us. Reagan was saying the problem was government. Voters seem to prefer to think that things aren't their fault or their problem. Carter presented long-term solutions; Reagan presented a quick fix and jingoism. Voters picked the quick fix and jingoism, and look where it's gotten us.
I do feel, though, that Ike was honest. There's just not the feeling that he sacrificed anything because of his honesty.

and some of his remarks regarding civil rights puzzle me. He was spot on about the military industrial complex.

Have to agree about Ike, I think Carter and Ford are also excellent choices.
