"What I Like to Refer to As..."
It wasn't just at this Tuesday's press conference, but many of Bush's public appearances... he makes statements like this*:

"Britain's domestic intelligence service, what I like to refer to as MI5..."

"There's been some violence carried out by Iraqi -- what I like to call Iraqi insurgents."

"My National Security Advisor, Condi Rice, is what I like to refer to as a 'brown-skinned person' and so my critics might say that she's incapable of what I like to call 'democracy'".

Why does Bush always act as if he's inventing new terms and turns of phrases? He seems to do that an awful lot. My guess is that, because of his limited vocabulary, it's one of the first times he's ever heard the word or phrase he's using. So he thinks that it's the first time anyone ELSE has ever heard it either, so to try to sound smart, he tries to pretend he came up with it all by himself.

*(not actual quotes)

2. Well, in his defense,
Bush has definately gotten rid of democracy, and replaced it with something that he likes to call democracy.

And that is just appauling to state that people may not think that Condi is capable because she is black.

The only people who would even think that are FReepers, dittoheads, and reich wingers.

3. Okay, the Condi Thing
Edited on Fri Apr-16-04 11:38 AM by GiovanniC
That was an extension of something Bush said at the Press Conference the other night. Not my personal views on the matter.

From the press conference:
"Some of the debate really center around the fact that people don't believe Iraq can be free; that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing and free."

So yeah, only freepers, ditto-heads, and reich-wingers... and that's where it came from. Their king.

that those are views that I personally espouse.

I don't. I despise them.

6. It's to appeal to working class white men.
Even use of words goes by rules that don't necessarliy constrain him. Not having a broad vocabulary and broad base of knowledge is OK -- you can still be on top. And if you don't know the real word that describes what you want to describe, that's OK. Invent a phrase (a nickname, for people) and attach it to what you're trying to describe. If you're the boss, you can do what you want to do.

7. Why? It's his way of using a new term he was just taught by Rove and Co.
It's his way of trying to seem natural in working in lingo he's really unfamiliar with. Also, b/c he's recently heard it for the first time, the arogant SOB thinks it must be new to most other people.

One older one: "What I like to call revisionist historians"

Plus, WHAT WAS the big one in the Press Conference? I posetd on it the other day, but I can't remember it for the life of me now. It was the most condescending thing in the entire evening. He stated some term or idea, and implied people listening might not be familiar with it.

Anyone remember it?

14. That's another good one. I don't know. Maybe the one I was thinking of..
... was in another recent statement by him.

Either way, they guy so often acts condescending when he mentions what is obviously a new idea or term to himself. He ends up only making himself look idiotic.

Someone posted the other day that he sounds like he's trying to teach 2nd-graders.

"I am going to go do what I like to refer to as a few lines of cocaine.

After that, I will drink what I like to refer to as a half-gallon of gin.

Then, I will go to bed for what I like to refer to as my daily eleven hours of sleep."
