Brown people OR brown skinned???
Am I losing my mind? I could have sworn I heard the man say.. smirk, smirk, "brown people".

Now the transcript says:

"Some of the debate really centers around the fact that people don’t believe Iraq can be free; that if you’re Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can’t be self-governing or free. I’d strongly disagree with that."

Which did he say?

1. It was a trick fuck statement
Bush tried to label everyone against the Iraq war as racists because they allegedly don't believe brown-skinned people are good or smart enough to be free or democratic.

Bush is a sick motherfucker.

2. a couple of the transcripts I've read have omitted things
like the UK Guardian, I think, didn't include the question asking if he made any mistakes. Some didn't include the Q&A at all.

amazing flight of incoherence, with some GREAT facial expressions, head bobs, mugging

at one point, he paused, lips pursed together in a VERY stupid expression, as if he was about to blow a big raspberry

I could HEAR the cameras whirring like crazy as he paused, for at least two, maybe three seconds, with that expression frozen on his face. those shutterbugs know what to look for!

that one's going to be all over the place tomorrow

can't WAIT!

4. transcript
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The legacy that our troops are going to leave behind is a legacy of lasting importance, as far as I'm concerned. It's a legacy that really is based upon our deep belief that people want to be free and that free societies are peaceful societies.
Some of the debate really centers around the fact that people don't believe Iraq can be free; that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing or free. I'd strongly disagree with that.
I reject that. Because I believe that freedom is the deepest need of every human soul, and if given a chance, the Iraqi people will be not only self-governing, but a stable and free society.
8. I would have sworn the same
I thought he said "brown people" too but, when I went over to NPR's website and listened to that part again, he said "brown skinned people." I suppose I must have misheard it the first time. It's a little weird that we both thought he just said "brown people" though.
18. What did you expect
This is a man when asked what the biggest mistake he ever made in his life was, replied, "Trading Sammy Sosa." Bear in mind this is a guy who is supposedly a recovering alcoholic, has been arrested at least twice on drinking-related charges, whose wife nearly left him over the alcohol, etc. Besides, bet if you check, Sosa was probably traded by the GM not the owners of the team.
15. Remember Poppy's "little brown" grandchildren remark?
"....Ten years before his Rice graduation, George P. (Bush) and the other grandchildren of the elder George Bush made their first mark on the national scene. Bush, in a presidential race against Democrat Michael Dukakis, was yearning to show off the grandkids to President Ronald Reagan, arriving for the GOP convention in New Orleans. Unaware of the media microphones picking up his comments, Bush pointed the family out to Reagan as he said, 'That's Jebby's kids from Florida, the little brown ones.'
The comment infuriated Democratic Hispanic activists, who charged that Bush was insensitive. An enraged Bush defended the comments as affectionate...."
