shook up a freeper today
Told him to read his history and hell see that the same conditions developing today in the USA are the same which led to the rise of communism in 1917.
An increasingly wealthy decadent greedy upper class taking control away from the people; workers losing any prospect of improving their lives; contempt by the govt for the people and the removal of any liberties existent.

And you can't say those things in America.

4. Good point.
On the other hand, we're a recession away from some of the same conditions that existed in pre-Hitler Germany.

If interest rates go up, people lose their houses. As jobs evaporate, people become desperate. As a war is lost, people seek a scapegoat. As inflation increases, lifetime savings are reduced to nothing.

All completely different than what's happening today, right? :evilfrown:

11. Here's the difference...
Nazi Germany was racially and culturally homogenous more or less-- we have more non-whites in this country than ever before. The fascists may indeed try to seize power, but if they are as overtly racist as the Nazis or the Klan, they will not likely get far. If you ask me the fascists are already seizing power and co-opting the language of the civil rights movement in the process.

13. Always sounded to me like they
were co-opting the language of true Christians and perverting it to their own ends. The Radical Religious Right has played a large role in ensuring we've already got several groups ready-made for scapegoating: Muslims, Arabs in general (including Persians and anybody "brown", LGBT folks certainly... it's a good start, don'tcha think?

14. Hey, as an Arab-American I certainly feel the heat
But as our (and Muslims, not one myself) population here increases, it's gonna be harder and harder for them to do that. I won't get into a debate about the meaning of true Christians, as I'm already slugging that one out on other threads.

Yet ANOTHER reason to nip this in the bud! Next thing you know they'll have us all living in tents, with HAREMS!!! (<--typical FAUX viewer reaction)

But seriously, the perceived "threat" from the groups I mentioned above has possibly never been higher, as the mainstream media delights in tittilating (sp?) us with.

And my criteria for "true Christians" is pretty lax so I'd rather not go there either!

EDIT: grammar, and it STILL doesn't sound right!

5. Maybe unions even
the pendulum swings and maybe workers will once again see the advantage of organizing and bargaining collectively.

8. Pendulum used to swing, back when there was a free and ethical press
Media now only serves to spread fear and maintain a consumer mindset.
"Be afraid of losing your job {buying power}. Be afraid of change {applying a new set of theories to fix problems. Be afraid of others {don't think policy through, just let us tell you what to believe}."

Hard for the pendulum to swing when there is not much chance for any but the ruling elite to have any voice or platform.

Thank heavens for Air America. It might just get enough people thinking to slow the juggernaut of Imperial America/Corporate Rule. But after listening to callers to CSPAN today, grumbling that the 9-11 hearings should not be public, I fear the American masses might just be too far gone along the genetic mutation path {turning to sheep} to be able to continue a government of, for and by The People.

10. Not True
Press was never ethical, fair or balanced. Read articles about strikes and unions from The Nation and The New York Times in the late 1800s and the 1930s. Controlled by greedy capitalists then. Controlled by greedy capitalists now.
