The League of Women Voters Must be GOP-Driven
Kay Maxwell, USLWV president, has published an alert to call the FEC and complain about the 527s, like MoveOn and TrueMajority.

Kay Maxwell listened to Britt Williams instead of David Dill and has fought Voter-Verifiable Paper trail.

I am resigning from the League.

1. That's pretty bad
Not too surprising; I wouldn't say they are definately GOP, but they are definately status quo, and MoveOn and so on are upsetting the Status Quo.

Too bad as they have provided some valuable services in the past; maybe they'll be a change in leadership nad they'll return to the middle eventually.

3. Sounds like they need members like you...don't quit
I don't know how the League deals with members and how much say they have in policy but if you have a vote in what the League's policy will be then you should stay in. If its a dictatorship then I would get out, also.

7. They are supposed to be a grassroots organization
but, the voter-verifiable paper trail came from top down. They refuse to budge.

4. earlier on DU: leaders taking stands without local input
if so, this contradicts LWV policy - local then state then natl study group then decision

my mother was in LWV for years - at times people got frustrated because League didn't respond quickly, but the policy of local meetings first slows things down

LWV statement on BBV did not wait for local input

9. It's a brilliant GOP strategy ...
and part of a trend to take over the leadership of large organizations and use them for their own purposes.

- They took over the board of AARP and used the organization to help shove through Bush's Medicare bill.

- They're trying to take over the Sierra Club and use it to oppose immigration.

- The takeover of the Republican party by Pat (the anti-Christ) Robertson's evil minions could also be considered part of this trend.

I'm sure there are many others, and I'm at a loss as to what can be done about it. These organizations have open memberships (anybody can join) and are usually desperate for volunteers to take leadership positions, making it fairly easy for well-heeled conservatives to step in. I don't like my dues or membership being used to support their GOP directed positions, but if I quit the organization I can't vote against the bastards later.

March for Women's Lives: April 25, 2004

January 20, 2004

The League of Women Voters is a cosponsoring organization for the March for Women's Lives to take place in Washington, DC on Sunday, April 25, 2004. For twenty years, LWVUS has worked to preserve the right to privacy in reproductive choice, so we are proud to join with over 700 organizations for the March.

The March will begin at noon at the National Mall, although participants may begin assembling on the mall, between the Smithsonian museums (between 3rd St. and 14th St.), as early as 10 a.m. After the March, a rally will be held from 1- 4 p.m. on the National Mall. Special seating will be available for people with disabilities. The rally program will be signed for the hearing impaired. The route is wheelchair accessible and transportation will be provided for those who cannot negotiate the route. If you require special seating, signing or transportation for the March route, please contact the March for Women's Lives office by clicking here.

What can you do to help with the March?

March with the League! The League is organizing a delegation to march together under the LWVUS banner on April 25. If you want to march with the League, contact [email protected].

Organize members of your community to participate in the March. You can receive flyers and other helpful March materials by contacting [email protected] or by visiting the March for Women's Lives Web site at https://www.marchforwomen.org.

Participate in a Meetup to communicate with others from your area who are planning to go the March. This is a good opportunity to make travel plans together.

12. I agree
When I noticed they weren't just ignoring the papter trail, but fighting against it, it became clear what was up with them.
