How many troops WILL BE needed in Iraq?

At a Pentagon news conference with President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan, Mr. Rumsfeld echoed his deputy's comments. Neither Mr. Rumsfeld nor Mr. Wolfowitz mentioned General Shinseki, the Army chief of staff, by name. But both men were clearly irritated at the general's suggestion that a postwar Iraq might require many more forces than the 100,000 American troops and the tens of thousands of allied forces that are also expected to join a reconstruction effort.

Two days later, Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz told a House committee that Shinseki's projections were "wildly off the mark" and added that it was "not a good time to publish highly suspect numbers." Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld later said that Shinseki "misspoke himself." Shinseki, through a spokesman, declined to back down.

In the days since, Pentagon civilian officials have proposed to top military officials an occupation force in the range of 45,000 to 60,000 persons, military officials say. Shinseki continues to believe that the option of an even larger force should be preserved because of the country's size and history of ethnic stress.

By way of comparison, Shinseki in 1997 commanded 60,000 allied soldiers to keep the peace among the 4 million residents of Bosnia, a ratio of one solider to every 67 residents. If that model were used in Iraq, 360,000 soldiers would be required.

1. MSNBC had a crawler
That said we have "thousands" of armed civilians working in Iraq. So, I guess they must be our mercenaries. Doesn't answer your post question. But seems like a good place for me to post it instead of starting a new thread. It all dovetails.

3. 300,000
500,000 should have been sent and there should be 300,000 there now to handle this godawful, shitty, mess.

Assuming we should have even gone in the first place, which is a no.

4. "Iraq is roughly the size of California"
That is the oft used excuse for not being able to find WMD and they add "we need more time", sounds familiar huh?

Of course Britt Hume tried to use that rough equation to say that soldiers in Iraq are safer than people in California (see all the Franken Hume threads).

The problem is that you have to imagine ( or they should have) the worst case scenario in which suddenly there is no law enforcement, no governent, and total lawlessness. For an AREA that size and with 25 Million people obviously more than ~140,000 soldiers and the 45-60K is ridiculous.

5. Brit's dishonest comparison
Yeah, plus it's a bad comparison to make.

But......I wouldn't expect any less from smarmy Brit and his gang of sycophant Kool-aid kids at FNC.
