Troops all set for operation "Vigilant Resolve" by surrounding Fallujah
From the Fox News website:

"The city is surrounded," Vanzant said. "It's an extended operation. We want to make a very precise approach to this. ... We are looking for the bad guys in town."

A Marine officer said U.S. forces had a list of targets for raids.

Marine 1st Lt. Eric Knapp said the troops will target the killers of the four Americans as well as rebels who have attacked U.S. forces and Iraqi police in the past month.

"Those people are specially targeted to be captured or killed," he said.

1. Well Good luck to our troops
Hope this happens as bloodlessly as possible, although I suppose that will be tricky.

2. They surrounded the city with concertina wire
I wonder if Saddam ever did that in his repression of his foes?

Let's see, 150,000 "coalition" troops behind concrete blast walls in bunkers, versus 24 million pissed off Iraqis with access to explosives, rifles, rpg's and bomb making materials......Hmmm, who wants to make odds on the outcome of this one???? What are the bookmakers giving?

4. 200,000 fallujans
who are being intimidated by 5,000 or so p/o'd former slavemasters. I'd say the odd's are only 50/50.

5. I was thinking more of the overall countrywide situation
rather than just that one city.

I'm sure the coaliton, with helicopters and night vision and all their big guns can fuck up one city for a while pretty good. However, this will only inflame the general populace of the country to join hands with the factions they previously hated to oust the invaders.

7. One option
Another is, "Hey thank God those Americans are finally putting those Fallujah bastards in their place."

In other words they might end up hating each other more than us; particularly because if the Fullajah people (not all of them of course) had their way, life would get a lot harder for the Kurds and others around the country.

all things being equal would be able to get their own state at this juncture. and keep it.
this is about iraqis wanting occupiers out of their country.

12. That's wishful thinking at best.
In my opinion.

Plus the split between the Shi'ites and Sunnis has hardly been decided.
