AA will not be milquetoast radio
The good thing about AA is that it has a balance of formats. You have the mellower Morning Sedition and Unfiltered. You have the comedic O'Franken Factor and Majority Report. And you have the firebrand Randi Rhodes, and possibly Mike Malloy if we could petition AA. AA gives choices to almost every liberal, unless they're a purist who believes the station is a DLC tool (that's the crap some here have been spewing about it, bullshit!)
The problem with people like Cuomo, Dershowitz, and Donahue, is that they were flat, boring, and milquetoast (actually I shouldn't really have Cuomo down since his show wasn't a "real" radio show format-wise). I remember watching Donahue, and I thought he was boring as hell, even though I agreed with him.

Liberal Radio doesn't have to be purely a clone of rw radio, and we're good at being unique. The choice we should have between formats should either be NPR-like, "Daily Show for Radio"-like, or with more spirited hosts. RW radio only has Limpballs and Hannity, and most of their copycat hosts (ie. Mark Levin, O'Reilly) don't get nearly as many listeners as Limpballs/Hannity. Most of the rw hosts are just riding coattails.

1. Donahue, while I agreed with him a lot, was

too accommodating with his rabid RW guests. He didn't even have a smidgen of that angry, fed-up edginess that most AAR hosts possess to varying degrees. Lacked sufficiently quick wit, too. So far, AAR's doing fine, as far as I'm concerned.

3. Donahue was great
I don't need some ranting raver to keep my attention. To me listening to an informed host is entertaining. As far as accommodating rabid guests...did you see him shut down the bitch Ann Coulter?

5. Argh, missed that one, and...
...despite my expressed misgivings about Donahue, I did love his show--he seemed to be the only one out there on mainstream TV saying things when said things were unfashionable and downright dangerous! (Hence, the show got canned.)

Personally, I can take only so much of fiery ranting, and that's why I like Majority Report the best--sober yet witty and bitingly sarcastic without overdoing it. Agree totally with the original post about the variety of tones and formats of AAR to please all kinds of libs.

Oh, I do hope they get Donahue on AAR, too!

6. Everywhere I turn...
...whenever the media presents the "view of the left", it has to be done opposed by some screaming right-wing shill. But they'll present the views of the religiously insane unopposed. I don't want rabid guests on AirAmerica. Let them stay on their own stations.

2. Donahue isn't all that bad
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 12:14 AM by NEOBuckeye
He's not so great in a one-on-one setting, and probably wouldn't be a good fit for radio. But I really liked his "live audience" show format on MSNBC before they canned it, despite having the best ratings of any MSNBC show, even Chris Matthews' Hardball. (And, except for Hardball, MSNBC's shows are pretty abysmal in the ratings.) Maybe Gore will hire Phil to do a similar show for his network?

I agree with you though about getting Mike Malloy on AA. Maybe they could give him the late 11 pm to 2 am slot instead of rebroadcasting Al Franken?

4. Oh but those ads
have got to go. The content seems interesting, but the ad format is so eerily similar to the RW shows it makes me cringe. Kind of like hearing muzac reminds me of being at the dentist.

9. AA vs. CC (Clear Channel)
The remarkable thing is that AA is actually able to stand up to (and hopefully kick the $%#! out of) Clear Channel (CC), which is a blatant rw soapbox supporter of the highest magnitude. CC owns the majority of our airwaves. But AA can do it, for sure. Just give them a chance, and your support. They will make mistakes in their opening days. Allow that please.

10. Does anyone know when the RATINGS come out?
I'd LOVE to know what portion of the market we're already grabbing...

11. I have been more impressed than I ever thought possible!
They are absolutely telling the truth with no holds barred! I fing love it, love it love it. I'm listening in my car and at work (even though the reception at work is bad). The interviews they've had this week have been incredible. Tonight, they (graffalo ? on sp.) and her co host were interwiewing Dean. Finally, they have the guts to really tell it like it is. I guess when the fate of civilation could be at stake...true heros come through.
