NRA 2004 - Freedom's Steel
While driving to work this morning I passed a billboard advertising an upcoming gun show at the Pittsburgh Convention Center:

NRA 2004
Freedom's Steel
4 acres of guns and gear

Does anyone else find it depressing ... this statement of the American mentality that freedom is had only through the muzzle of a gun?

1. Another sign
of why Pennsylvania is still a Commonwealth. I maintain we are too stupid for statehood.

When our major state product goes from steel to potholes the size of RVs and the largest employer is Wal-Mart, the gun show thing does not surprise me.

6. You say that as if a "commonwealth" is a bad thing, JM
Having been born and spent the first 24 years of my life in PA, I always took a little pride in the fact that we were a commonwealth. It goes back, in fact, to the Quaker origins of Pennsylvania, and the Quakers' disdain for grand accumulation or shows of ostentatious wealth.

Compare that with my present state of NY, which has a legacy of cronyism and absentee landlords ruling over restless serfs like few others in the union.

Given the true meaning of a commonwealth (that the natural "wealth" is shared by all), I don't see it as a bad thing. Rather, I see it as something that PA should once again strive to achieving.

Not that I'm going to hold my breath, or anything.... ;-)

2. Irony
To me the irony lies in the mentality of "protecting" yourself from your government with weapons.

Ya see..many of these yahoos support the military, police, etc.. the same groups that, if the "government" were to go "door to door", would be the forces used to take away the guns.

Support with one hand and fear with the other.
Go figure.

7. I got a advertisement in the mail about the gun show, for the $10
entrance fee you get a membership in the NRA. I am a gun owner but I
despise the NRA they are nothing but an arm of the Republican party.
You can bet they will passing out anti Kerry propaganda there.
