He's being very nice to Dean. Contrast the tough question delivery by Tim R vs. King and you'll see what I mean.

I wasn't expecting a Russert style skewering by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe Larry will let him ride him like he did Brando.

13. We're selling the stiffness...
...;) He's not full of verbal gaffes like junior, his campaign is obviously powered by the enthusiasm and cheers of his supporters. Yep, he's "stiff". After 3 years of loosey goosey I want to have a beer with Bush, I'll take "stiff". "Stiff" in 2000 would have meant we'd likely not be in the piss poor position we are today...

20. Yes, he still needs to work on style.
I was hoping Martin Sheen and Rob Reiner would give him some pointers. Body language is highly under-rated....

He is comming on strong with issues....Once he gets going, he relaxes.

This is a really big week for Dean!!!!!!

But seriously, he's looking pretty damn good. He obviously learned from the Timmy appearance the other week. But the perceived 'stiffness' is just the way he is...all business. I prefer it to W's bogus "good ole boy" bullshit...

I'm getting close to deciding Howie's my man.

23. BOOM!
He just dropped the BOMB! Brought up Cheney's statement in the VP debates. Civil rights, equal rights under the law. Excellent, he comes out unambiguously and with a well formed statement. Marriage is NOT the business of the federal government, but ensuring equal rights is. If someone gets married in Canada, I'll see to it that the states of the US recognize their rights.

Now on Terry, talking about Rush and Tom, not being under their thumb, not letting them frame the debate. Denies conversation with Terry.

Talking about fundraising...

...said that overturning voters is not a good idea, then alluded to the 2000 pres election....all of the votes should have been counted...we still don't know who actually "won" the 2000 election...conservatives have a habit of trying to overturn legal elections...

32. This is a great appearance...
...and he's hitting all these questions out of the park. Gives credit to Graham and Kucinich for not supporting the war. Explains his reasons for opposition. On the VP question, he spoke honestly and sincerely, saying that it was just common sense that some of the things he'd look for:

Regional consideration (from the south)
someone who can be president (statement of strong support for Gore)
consider constituency (a woman or minority would certainly not be out of the question)

excellent appearance

50. Yeah, and THAT's leadership
In fact, that's kinda what Dean said he was going to do: energize the base and bring along the swing voters in the process. You can DO that if you are willing to take positions that are right, coherent and pragmatic without consulting the damed polls first. In Dean's model (the Leadership Model, remember), you DRIVE the polls.

44. The more I see
the more I like. He listens, he hears, he connects.
As for his "stiffness," to me it's a sign that he
doesnt have to keep bobbing & weaving. He's a guy
who gives you the feeling he knows who he is & isnt
putting on a show. You can see he would have been
a good doctor, or a doctor you could trust. No time for
bullshit, but tell him what yr problem is & he's going
to give it to you straight what's going on & what can
be done & what yr chances are.... Also not talked about
a lot is the importance of voice in a vandidate.
I first heard Dean on
a tape, a 15-minure interview with Warren Olney, and I
heard that & got real serious & started nodding as he
was laying it out. His voice is him. His voice is
plenty animated. He's authentic, that ol' authenticity
that just aint there a lot in politicians. I dont agree with him
on all the issues, but his attractiveness has more to
do with a visceral strength & this feeling like here's
a guy who you can connect with, plus is alive & open &
able to grow & change in the office. And of course, yes,
a man who aint afraid of those *********** BushCo. Gary
Cooper, Harry Truman, etc. BushCo can say they want Dean, but
I bet they have their doubts. Like I say, the more I see,
and hear, the more I like.

My favorite Dean moment tonight: When the caller said she was going to be attending her first Dean meetup, Dean lit up like a Christmas tree, and you could tell that it was not only that people are behind him that made him happy, but that people are getting involved.

I was really glad he had that opportunity to "light up" because he's so often SUCH a serious man (appropriate, IMO, since we have such serious problems), but he has an absolutely dazzling smile and very personable manner and I was afraid those lovely attributes were about to get totally missed.

You're absolutely right: like a Christmas tree.

61. I lost count on the number of lies she said
She kept repeating that we know that Saddam *HAS* chemical weapons because he has used them in the past. I really wish that someone would counter that lie when someone speaks it by saying that it only means that he had chemical weapons in the past, which nobody would deny, and that since the last known time that he used them, chemical weapons would have deteriorated to the point of being useless. The only way that anyone can say that he has chemical weapons is to actually find them. Until then, we don't know anything.

60. Quick job, Wonk.
I saw it, but I am listening now. It was worth another listen. How do you do that so quickly?

63. Well he was nothing like I expected.
I had never seen him live before. Only speeches. From all I've read I was expecting an unpredictable hothead. Instead I got a calm, measured, intelligent and intelligible discussion. No fireworks. Just straight answers. Of course, it helps that he says everything I want to hear. While he was on a maintenance person from my building came over. She looked at the screen and said who's that? I said Howard Dean, he's running for president. She said Yeah? He looks good. He could be president. For what it's worth...
