How are the gestures of patriotism in your area? Flags on cars, in yards,
etc. I only see an occasional flag pole in a yard once in a while now.

BUT!!

Today I thought an ambassador was in town! There were 4 flag poles... on the car! I was tempted to salute!

but... but ... it wasn't a limo. It was a junker car ... at the frickin grocery store!

*sigh*

This I can handle though. It was the kiss up to bush or you belong in Guantanamo patriotism 2 years ago that I couldn't stand.

Carry on ...

1. I've only seen one pickup truck with a ratty flag here.
I live in Baltimore... 90% Democrats!

16. Don't let them have the flag!
I put one on my car next to my Draft Clark sticker, and it will be there next to my Kerry sticker when it arrives.

TAKE BACK THE FLAG!!!!

24. They aren't getting my flag
We just put a new one on the flag pole. We flew a flag before Bush* and we'll fly one when he's gone. I refuse to let them have it. I also refuse to put one on my car. I saw a mini van that had six on it last year. I though it was an amusement park.

3. There are a few really faded flags on homes
on my street. Most of the outward signs of "patriotism" are gone. It is surprising since I live in a Marine Corps town.

The most encouraging sign is a decal on my neighbor's car that says "Dump Bush - He is a con man and gets the military killed". This neighbor is about 70 years old and a former Marine.

11. the flags should be ...
...UPSIDE DOWN .... this country is in DISTRESS

our only hope of a non-violent exposition, the 911 Committee, has turned into a bush-love-fest.

5. I see lots of "Jail Bush" stickers on newspaper vending machines, etc
OH you mean gestures of "Gawd Bless Amurika" nationalism. That b.s. stopped around here a long time ago.

I guess it's because I'm in New York and we're still waiting for that federal anti-terrorism money we were promise.

18. I'm a bit north of you, San Diego, in Temecula ...
and I'm disgusted by all the flag-waving I see -- I'm unfortunate enough to be represented by the Repuke-lican Issa. My liberal friend laughs because I have a People-for-the-American-Way sticker - that has a flag as part of its logo - and the local idiots think I'm agreeing with their faux-Patriotic crap.

19. Don't get me wrong ... I support the troops wholeheartedly ...
but patriotism has become equal with Bush in this particular locality. My friends in the military just want to come home.

8. Some really faded out yellow ribbons
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 05:21 PM by Marianne
and in a way this is sad. If they support the troops and hung out these yellow ribbonsk then the should not let them rot on the trees and turn to white due to the bleaching of the sun.

It was just the "trendy" thing to do.

I see some ostentatious flags on diehards pick up trucks. But really see not too many concerted efforts toward the trendy flag waving that I saw after 9-11.

I know of one neighbor who is a diehard Pub who had the flag out, day after day--and that flag is no longer flown.

9. I have an American flag sticker on my back window...
...and a Dump Bush 2004 sticker on my rear bumper.

That is, for me, an expression of significant patriotism.

10. I'm not sure its "patriotism". It seems more like jingoism
and its pretty rare these days in my part of the deep south, which I take as a sign people are starting to wake up and see that war is not a video game, or a football game or some sporting event, but an ugly, brutal, bloody, ghastly, godawful thing that should be reserved ONLY for defending yourself and not to steal oil.

Or maybe I'm just an optimist this afternoon.

12. I remember right after 9/11...
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 05:26 PM by mark11727
...I was in the Home Deport parking lot, and a large black pickup truck with two HUGE American flags rolled by. It was something I needed to see, and I was glad to see it. As the weeks and months after the attacked continued, I saw more and more flags (and a LOT of them on stores owned by immigrants!)... we even had one mounted on one of our fence posts.

After a while though, as the flags became more ubiquitous, they were also less noticed. Nobody took them in for cleaning or repair, and I saw too many big-ass SUV's with pink-grey-slate rags where red-white-blue once proudly waved.

Patriotism isn't something you wear (remember all those flag pins the Republicans were sporting a few years ago?)... it's something alive in your soul.

I still like to fly the colors, but at least I keep mine clean.

15. 9/11 Bumper sticker > WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 05:51 PM by rayantoky
This bumper sticker spotted in my driveway on my '85 Mercedes Diesel Wagon, right next to my CIA LIES bumper sticker.
My flag lasted one day and my Osama poster came down in less then a week.

21. People who have flags
should make sure they're properly displayed.

Car flags are not proper display as the manner of display is destructive. How many tattered, ripped to the blue field shreds have you seen on cars? I've seen a lot. And brand new, but how long do they stay that way.

Flags from flagpoles at people's homes in my neighborhood have tattered flags too big for the poles and bunched up at the top. Not lit at night and not weather resistant. It should be replaced with a new flag the correct size.

If you can't light it at night, please take it inside. The US military does.

Flags have fallen off mailboxes and are lying on the ground, flags too large for the outside wall mounted jack are also on the ground, usually on front steps where people can step on them.

I see a lot of flags, very few are properly displayed.

The rules can be found in the Uniform Flag Code. I learned them in Girl Scouts and I'd much rather see flags displayed properly in small numbers than huge arrays of tattered and faded flags dragging on the ground.

23. Not so much anymore
New Englanders are very reserved and don't like ostentation as a general rule. I see small flag stickers here and there but no where near what we saw after 9-11.
