Question to any veterans that got out of service within last ten years
Did you have to pull KP duty or was it all done by civilians?

1. I'm not a veteran, but
my husband pulls KP duty all the time in Iraq. Also, he did once in a while when he wasn't deployed, but only before he was married.

8. Thanks to your husband for his service.
I hope all goes well with him over there, and that you have the support you need here at home.

2. A few times in Basic Training, and then once after

The one time after I was an NCO so all I had to do was just monitor people signing into the mess hall correctly. More boring than anything; 12 hour shift.

The only time they seem to regularly give you KP is in Basic Training, almost as part of the general abuse you receive.

3. It's Been 13 Years For Me
Did it during Basic Training/AIT. When I arrived at my permanent party
base, KP was done by those who were assigned to the messhall.

Didn't really notice civilians in the job until the 80's, and even then it was only at certain bases and in limited numbers.

When I was stationed in the Sinai with a peacekeeping force, the messhall was run by a company out of Texas, called E-Systems, they
used Egyptian workers and mid-level managers, but the main supervisors
were either American or British.

E-Systems also helped with our transportation and vehicle maintenence,
along with US support troops(ie. mechanics, drivers, etc.).

4. Civilians did it in Germany
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 05:44 PM by Kimber Scott
Mostly service-member's spouses. They were paid pretty well, from what I understand. (Sometimes, people had to pull KP in Basic Training. I did once.)

On edit: Why do you ask?

7. I can see that.
In the Army we couldn't take our KPs to the field. I can see why they wouldn't want civilians on a ship, either. Of course, maybe, Halliburton would do it for a few thousand dollars per meal!

5. Only did KP in basic training
There were both military and civilian working in the mess halls once I went permanent party. However, for the military staff, it was a career field, not an arbitrary duty assigned and reassigned to different people on a schedule, like it was when in basic training.

10. In Basic
and only one other time on a weekend drill. I was a reservist. When I was in AIT we had a civilian run mess hall and on all of my two week things there were Army folks who cooked and cleaned up but the only people involved had that as their main duty.

11. Kitchen Police
In the Navy(mess cook) Army (KP) Air Force (KP).While in the navy KP Mess Cook, wasn't too bad the food was good.In the AF didn't have to pull KP,civilians were paid to do that.In the army I pulled KP and that was one of the worst experience of my military career, the IQ of army cooks are on a par with George W.Bush, some of the worst clowns on the planet.
