Poll question: Local Howard Stern wannabes are misogynistic and should be REMOVED!!
.....two local radio DJ's here are constantly callin' women "BITCHES...STUPID BITCHES...asshats....and whores" all on the air with their call in show...which is SUPPOSED to be a RADIO station who play MUSIC but instead they've decided to run their big fat mouths more than play any music...also they have caller ID and if you call in and complain or give 'em what for and hang up they'll CALL YOU BACK and harrass you....as you can't even call the station by dialin' *67 and blockin' your phone number....yesterday as I happened to hear them talkin' about our local mayoral election and their ideas of how the black democrat incumbent should be beaten because our town has..."gone to hell in a handbasket" as they see it.

Well I for one think they're makin' the community a LOT worse off by their demeaning women all the time....and what's EVEN MORE SICKENING is these women and young girs seem to just LOOOOVE it and laugh and joke with them....so I called my *dem rep* to see if they could turn them in to the FCC for obsenity as I feel that they are pushin' the envelope and should be taken off the air or at least FINED and made to cease and desist this blatant disregard for our community as a whole....they also drive around town in a HUMMER with their logo all over it!!! :grr:

So my question to you all....do you agree...this type of thing shouldn't be allowed and I did the right thing by trying to something about it?

1. Do like I do
Utilize the "off" button or change the station... I agree fully, though - it does send the wrong message to both young boys and girls.

However, I was offended yesterday when consumer advice "guru" Clark Howard said outsourcing jobs overseas was "no big deal."

I called the station PD and gave him hell for it.

.....and heard them call a woman up to give her the ASSHAT award for the way she voted which was against THEIR views....they are SCUM and my small community is being made a LOT worse by their SPEW imho and if I just LET IT GO...then my community will become worse off for it!! :(

2. Vote with your dial.
Find a station with more music and less talk...then promote that station among your friends and co-workers every chance you get. Just bad-mouthing the ignoramuses on the other station won't be as effective. Might even gain them better ratings.

Howard, however, has a humanity to him, an honesty that is like a breath of fresh air...that is why he is the King of Media.

Howard makes it a point to mention how all the sluttiest women were probably molested. He adds value and although he does get nasty with women based on their looks he also doesn't call them ALL bitches throughout every show.

however, the other night I caught it and it was a fascinating interview with Mia Farrow, right after she wrote her autobiography...

Howard castigated Woody Allen for the abuse of his daughter, I mean absolutely chapped his hide for it - it was devestating, and he fawned all over Mia - Howard has a heart, I'm telling ya...

6. Hate speech is hate speech
As long as rape statistics and child molestation statistics are where they are, this should be banned.

As soon as society shows it has reformed, and that this is just entertainment, then we can resume it.

As of now, people are entirely too primitive and unwilling to control themselves.

I dislike being put in the position of defending idiots like the ones described above, but the issue is, was, and shall remain how to de-emphasize their comments and their influence, not how to squelch them. I say this as a man who thinks that relatively uncontroversial stuff like "Joe Millionaire" and "Survivor" is the basest, most destructive "entertainment" ever produced in America and that the cretins and bottom-feeders that produce it, engage in it, and watch it should be driven out to the center of the ocean and disposed of. But for me to mean that as anything but hyperbole. So I wield the little bit of power I have to dissuage America's descent down the "reality show" sewer, which is to

a) not watch it

and

b) chime in about it in public and private forums such as this.

What you're endorsing is the kind of Big Brotherhood the Chimp and his Fundie hordes want for us. Nothing personal, but you don't get to decide when I'm "grown up" enough to "handle" Howard Stern.

Remember, you can't have a Taliban without the word "ban."

9. Freedom of Speech
Means that you will on occasion, or maybe frequently, hear things that you find completely and totally repulsive. If you support stopping free speech simply becasue you do not like what is said, you are no better than the freepers. Remember, they always have a reason why so-and-such speech hurts someone too.

Don't be like them.

And it trumps your inability to deal with something you dislike being said.

If you do not want to be compared to a freeper, do not act like one.

And incidentally, it is usually freepers that bring Clinton into everything.

and I am no fan of those types of radio shows; however, there is no reason that they should be pulled off the air.

If you plan to organize a boycott of their sponsors, or to make it your goal to point out to everyone you can what they're doing wrong...that's fine.

But I do not agree with the choice to make this an issue for the FCC.

30. i think the issue...
in my mind is that the FCC's crackdown on "obscenity" is flawed.

First of all, I think it's a violation of free speech.
Secondly, their definition of "obscene" is not spelled out very well, which means that they can theoretically deem anything they don't like to be obscene...and then fine the offenders.

Do I like those misogynistic radio shows? No more than I like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity's radio programs. But I don't think the way to combat them is to help the FCC perpetuate its witch hunt.

And I really hope this isn't coming across as condescending.
I understand that you're frustrated about the situation, and you have every right to be offended by this radio show. I just don't think that trying to get the government involved is the right way to go.

..of freedom of speech has been warped and twisted to fit all views...and it is bein' used by everyone as a way to divide us and make gov't useless in takin' a stand on anything anymore...for if the GOV'T doesn't ENFORCE what's best for ALL it's people then it is worthless...as it has become it seems...unfortunately....since this type of talk is allowed it makes society as a whole worse off...regarless of the freedom to say whatever you wanna say. I'm even more upset about this now after bein' compared in this thread to a freeper...just because I have an opinion they don't agree with!! x(

Take that anger and turn it on the DJs in question.

Start a boycott. Get the attention of the local news media.
Just don't call into the radio show. You'll only become the target of their ridicule.

And please don't get the FCC involved. They've got better things to do...like allowing huge media companies to build monopolies.

11. I long for the early days of FM radio.
When the DJ's would play music and not shout at you and talk as little as possible. Then along came the shock jocks and less and less music and the insipid phone calls until it became talk radio. I now only have the two public radio stations locked in on my car radio. If it's not on them I'm not listening to it.

..then write them letters and tell them why you won't be buying their products or visiting their businesses.

That's something we can all do for things we find racist, sexist, homophobic, or so soaked in White House lies as to be a misuse of the airwaves. Remember, the FCC still tells these guys they have to be of service to the community. While I don't condone censorship, I do let people know I'm voting with my wallet on some issues.

Even if they were calling males demeaning, obscene names. This isn't tolerated in the workplace(supposedly), so why is it tolerated on the airwaves, which we own(debatable, I know)? The dj's calling a listener back could constitute harassment. I think I'd call from a pay phone.

51. I voted other.
I firmly believe in free speech - but I have a really big problem with hate speech... If there were some female DJ's out there screaming about men being 'little pricks' or 'weenies' or 'all assholes' there would be an issue raised .
If DJ's of any gender started screeching about Ni**ers, Sp*ks, K*kes.... There would be issues.

But, then, just turn it off - right?

My 7 year old son got a really coolCD player/alarm/radio. It has no parental controls. As a parent I should be able to decide for myself whether a station is appropriate for him, or his older sister to listen to. I have never been called a prude, but damn!!...there is some sick shit on the radio (RUSH also comes to mind....)
I have parental controls set on the TV - I have parental controls on the internet - I approve of their DVD's - I choose which games are age-apppropriate.

There is nothing I can do to control crap being tuned in (he loves cruising the channels)

Do I get rid of his radio? Tell him not to use it - only CD's?

I am torn.

.....by who think this kind of talk is COOL and will emulate these morons....if the women that call up and are accepting of it that's their own personal problem/choice but that's how the world is now...all the eons of struggle women went thru to have rights...yet less than a century later it's considered the IN thing to be called bitches and ho's and submissive to THE MAN....and the double standard you stated is sooooo very sad but true too!!

53. OK, for all those who are for freedom of speech on
this issue. What if it was hate propaganda being spewed about a certain racial group or gays. Talking about "niggers" or "kikes" or "faggots" in a negative and demeaning way. Suppose the KKK got their own radio show and attempted to foment a hostile environment toward one of their targeted groups. Would it still just be free speech? Or is that different?

57. Your welcome, but you notice how
nobody else responded. It seems as though women are still fair game when it comes to hate speech. I guess we have a long way to go! :evilfrown:

58. Yep I did notice.......
....in LBN there is an article posted about the FCC and I had to agree with the FCC's crackdown on indecency as there was once a much nicer period in our not too distant past when this type of thing was regulated...but it's ALL OR NOTHING now...never an in between anymore...just doesn't sit well with me especially in this instance and context...and it's no wonder our democratic ideology has been mocked and made into the hateful spew it has as of late by the right...eventhough what they say is even more hatefull and wrong it's deemed acceptable and the very ones who preach love and acceptance on the right fall for THAT instead of ever listening to the truth of what our party has to say anymore! :(

55. I'd rather just have music
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 10:25 PM by Nobody
When the DJ starts yakking, I shove in a tape.

When I'm at home, I listen to internet radio stations. Go to the MIT radio stations of the world web site (Can't remember the URL, but you can find it in Google). Some have no talkative DJs or commercials at all and nothing but music.

One that I go to rather frequently is a Russian station, Radio 101 at http://www.101.ru. No commercials. No DJ blather. Only music. And it's all over the map musically, you can get Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, the Beatles, Offspring, various Russian rock groups, etc. No talk other than an hourly station ID.

Anet is a blues station in Antarctica with very little talk.

If you play around at the MIT site, you can find some of your own favorites.

The morning shows around here are utterly obnoxious, and most of them are blatantly right wing. Tom Barnard was giving lots of free advertising to Norm Coleman when he was running for Senate.

On edit: discovered that a URL I had wasn't correct.

59. Not a free speech issue...
If they want to exercise their free speech they are free to publish a book, magazine, CD, whatever. Stand on the street corner and yell for all I care. But in this case they are using the public airwaves *which WE OWN* and it's in our rights to make a stink about it. We need to return a sense of political balance and public service back to our publicly owned airwaves. If the right wing is going to make a big issue out of every minor criticism of the president or brief flash of a breast why not throw it back in their face and demand their bigoted mouthpieces be thrown off the air?

There was a very interesting article about this topic on alternet which mentioned the history of the Fairness Doctrine in broadcasing and how it's been replaced by some pretty shocking hate speech and calls to violence from right wing figures.
