Poll question: Your favorite political magazine?
Edited on Sat Mar-13-04 08:04 PM by faygokid
There are many, many good ones, but I love Harper's the best. Lewis Lapham, Harper's Index, and brilliant articles every month about the BushBots. Used to put Atlantic Monthly first, but Michael Kelly (RIP) turned it to the Right. Your thoughts are solicited, and accepted with gratitude.

Brand new magazine; it seems to be the Canadian equivalent of Harpers.

3. Obviously, a joke - but Limbaugh is a dangerous joke.
Can you imagine someone with his baggage as a left-leaning commentator? He would be destroyed. He is the worst influence on public comment in American history, and yes, that includes Father Coughlin.

Similar to George. Just flashed on it; would love to see an issue of "Eye" magazine again. Think I got the first ever Blood, Sweat & Tears single through it being included in their magazine ("God Bless the Child," as I recall). Wow, memories flooding back. Probably alone in recalling that here (it can be a lonely place).

44. A friend of mine works there
as a fact checker/researcher. I know, I know, I've already made pretty much all the jokes: "Can we get ahold of Name Withheld and make absolutely certain it was 'throbbing' before we run this?"

Anway, if you remember the Hustler-sponsored prayer vigil for the painful death of Bill O'Reilly, the guy dressed as a priest brandishing a bullhorn is my friend. He was also heavily involved in the Flynt for Governor campaign. Frankly, though I can't stand Hustler magazine, I couldn't be more proud that that man is my friend.

52. You know, it's funny
When he first got the job there, he'd send me a copy now and then with post-it notes (at least I HOPE they were post-it notes *rimshot*) pointing to stuff he'd written. It was almost invariably one of those phony letters where someone has spontaneous casual sex on the job, loaded with groaner double-entendres sexualizing the jargon of the profession involved. He's WAY better than that -- we used to both write for the same music magazine, and he eventually became editor-in-cheif. In fact, he's the guy who gave me my break as a writer, which is part of why I cut him slack about writing cheesy porn now. To be fair, he does get to do substantive articles once in awhile (and of course the cool street theater stuff), but I find myself wondering if it's not utterly wasted on Hustler's readership, like when they run Greg Palast's stuff. Good on them for doing it, but it's still just a stroke-mag!

Then again, there are plenty of people whose best interests lie with the left but for whom The Nation or suchlike would go over their heads due to poor education. Maybe Hustler going openly libertarian/rad-left is serving a real need and purpose, I dunno. When you think about it, Larry Flynt HAS done more to protect the First Amendment than any politician or presidential administration in my lifetime. And how fucked up is THAT?

46. Harper's
Harper's has come up in like three other threads this weekend, mostly because its March issue is so exceptionally strong. Hit the newsstand and pick it up, DUers, it will not disappoint!

Amazing how after a day and dozens of votes, the once-mighty Atlantic is still sportin' a big fat goose egg in this poll. I agree 100% with you, faygokid, Michael Kelly has ruined that rag. The loss isn't quite as tragic as the startling neo-con turn the New Republic took all those years ago, but it's still a big loss.

... are what I always brring back from the bookstore. Each one is great in its own right. There's no better essayist in the US today than Lewis Lapham. He's astoundingly good -- possibly the best of the last 50-100 years.

53. Lapham ...
... is a very good essayist on political matters, but before you place him at the pinnacle of the last 50-100 years, better check out James Baldwin, who as a gay black man was writing in more difficult times.

54. While Baldwin's writing talents were truly prodigious ...
Edited on Sun Mar-14-04 12:54 PM by TahitiNut
... I wouldn't characterize him as an essayist. (Yes, I'm aware of Toni Morrison's collection of his essays.) Baldwin wrote novels and plays as well and I think most would be familiar with him through those works. As an impassioned spokesman articulating the injustice and plight of the disenfranchised in America, Baldwin was nearly peerless. It would be difficult to overstate his accomplishments as a writer. But I regard his influence to be more attibutable to his mastery of (and passion for) the issues rather than of the essay form itself. Lapham, on the other hand, seems to master the form in a manner that would place him among the best of the 19th century (which I see as the 'golden age' of essays).

On edit: No, I'm not formally trained in composition or English. I'm merely a dabbler, browser, reader, and trivialist.

58. The Washington Monthly.
It has a reputation for being ahead of the curve on political issues since it's founding in 1972 by Charles Peters, a former lawyer, John F Kennedy campaign leader in West Virginia, and director of program evaluations in the Peace Corps.

Lots of today's journalists and authors (the non-whore variety) cut their writing teeth working as interns for this publication. An internship there is considered an "alpha-plum-job" (my emphasis) for an aspiring investigative reporter.
