Republicans eating their own
Last night while watching TV a commercial came on that at first looked like a Bush ad against Kerry. I don't remember all the charges that were being lobbed but it was basically a lot of tax and spend accusations with a picture of John Kerry on the screen. After the announcer was finished going through the list he says, "John Kerry? No, Arlen Specter". The ad ended by saying, "Arlen Specter, far too liberal." No candidate was mentioned as a possible replacement for Specter, the message was just that Specter was too liberal, and by initially leading us to believe that the ad was about Kerry it looks as though the Republicans are trying to get two birds with one stone by tarring two pols in one ad. I don't think Arlen Specter is even particularly liberal, he might be pro-choice or something but he's hardly what I'd call "too liberal". It's disturbingly obvious that this election year the Republicans are going to give another hard shove to the right trying to get rid of moderate Republicans, and if Bush wins they will go absolutely mad with power. I know it might sound overdramatic but I'm thinking that maybe I should reread Margaret Atwood's "A Handmaid's Tale". This is the first time that I will be contributing money to a presidential candidate's campaign. These Repub motherfuckers have GOT to go.

1. This has been the first year for me, too.
This year, so far, I think I've donated about $500 to various candidates and organizations. That's about $465 more than I've ever donated before. And I'm not through. Randi Rhodes said the same thing a while ago. I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I'd be defending Arlen Specter. But we have to throw the bastards out of the Republican party as well as out of the White House and the Congress.

13. I certainly hope you aren't planning to contribute to Specter's campaign
The Democrats need every dime possible. Republicans have no problem raising money without your help.

16. No!
I don't give money to repugs. Especially when he knew the impeachment was a crock and all he could manage was "not proved."

2. Is Specter from Pennsylvania???--minds gone blank
If he is, I can't help but wonder about something. We won Pennsylvania with less than 5% of the vote. With all the unemployment, etc., I see nothing that would cause those voters to run and embrace Bush. In fact, I would think we would be winning that state fairly solidly in '04. Therefore, I'm wondering who these clows are hurting. Seems to me the people of PA would not want some ultra-right winger when they don't want Bush.

4. I hope you are right.
The ad is being run by Pat Toomey, an ultra right wingnut trying to unseat Specter as PA Senator. He's been running ads claiming that Specter is too liberal, and equating him with Kerry, and other libruls. Santorum, Mr. Ultra Wingnut Himself, is endorsing Specter, so that should satisfy the wingnut brigade.

Specter is very popular in PA, and I doubt if Toomey can beat him in the primary. I also believe we'll go Kerry in November. Economy is as bad here as everywhere else, so we must hope and pray that PAers will vote for regime change.

8. Yes, Specter is a Pennsylvania Senator
After I saw the add I thought that it might alienate possible swing voters in Pennsylvania--people who are unsure about Kerry but who might not like the swipes being taken at Specter. Do you understand what I mean? I have to think it through a bit more. But that's my feeling.

3. When will the other shoe drop?
When will mod republicans get pissed that the rightwing is running ads against them? Afterall, the far right is actually a minority in this country --they just scream the loudest (kind of like the Islamic fundamentalist extremists).

6. feisty--good point
Indeed, if they piss on a sitting senator who has got to have a lot of fans to be constantly re-elected, then it starts dividing up the party. You know, maybe things will move from where they are now to these ultra right loonies still not satisfied and starting to crap on their own party thus creating a big divide. Perhaps by '08 the republicans will be running a candidate and some "Christian Republicans Whom God Has Chosen as His People" party will run a candidate and divide the hell out of the red states. Bring it on.

5. Wow! the GOP running against Arlen
who knew?

Maybe this year will be about the GOP imploding on themselves as much as us Dems running united (for the first time in years) against them.

7. It's for Pat Toomey
Pat Toomey is a Republican who is basically being squashed by his own party in PA. Apparently, both Toomey and Specter are running for the same seat in the senate, both are Repub's with Bush backing during their days as House Rep’s, and both of them are conservative toads who tow the party line 90% of the time. The difference between Beavis and Butthead here is that Toomey is for capping lawsuits against hospitals and doctors for the pain and suffering aspect of malpractice complaints. He believes (and correctly) that if we allow these lawyers to rake doctors and hospitals over the coals, that the doctors will simply leave PA for greener pastures. Specter, who is an ambulance-chasing lawyer and who has a son who is an ambulance-chasing lawyer, is against these caps. Hard to believe a Republican votes against the people's interests for personal gain. Both of these clowns have shown ads with them parading around with Shrub and saying they have his support. Apparently, Toomey was told to stop using the chimp's image in his ads because the Neo-Cons want Specter in DC as a PA senator. I believe this add was trying to rally Toomey supporters (rich doctors who happen to be Republicans and currently screwed by Specter's platform) and get Toomey his seat.

10. Parallel Universe Imploding? Isn't Specter From Scotland???
I'm getting the same feeling now that I did in '92...there is a big disconnect happening between the GOOP and the rest of reality. They're so conflicted in their past 4 years of destruction and their lifelong straight-jacket of rhetoric (tax & spend, librul, wave the flag, pray to jesus) that they're not seeing that people are really hurting out there.

They're not seeing the unemployment (Glassman last night was classic, when he attempted not only to say "dis-located workers" don't count but those unemployed really aren't), the rising prices (anyone getting gas for under $1.50 a gallon????), the political divisiveness (and it's obvious where the loudest noises are eminating from) and loss of trust and confidence. They're clueless!

Unlike '92 when there was still a Democratic legislative to blame, this time the shit is all over the GOOP and I say let's let it pile up and smother the bastards. Let them say black is white, deny and get trapped, lie and be exposed...I'm starting to really enjoy this.

Hopefully you folks in Pa. are working hard and fighting the good fight here...Specter is a first class ass, but he's a better POS than your other Sanctimonius Senator (is it true about him holding the fetus???) and there are a few Congressmen who need to be shown the door, too (como se dice: Weldon). Overall, I feel good about Pennsylvania joining with us here in Illinois in remaining solidly Democratic this year...and brining the folks in Ohio and West Virginia along...with these states, Florida and the south can go Bush itself (footnote: Bush is now used here as a replacement for the evil, anger form of fuck)

Cheers!

12. A Rumor/Story From 2002, IIRC
Supposedly one of his children was stillborn and he brought the had the fetus buried...not uncommon, but supposedly before the burial, he and his family held the fetus. I remember there being a story attached to it, just don't have the time or the Google-saavy to find if the story is still around or if it's made it to Snopes.
