BREAKING NEWS: As the debate over same-sex marriage continues in the Massachusetts Legislature, the California Supreme Court has halted the issuance of marriage licenses in the city of San Francisco. -- Developing

the laws that are on the books.

"The court did not rule on the legality of such marriages, and justices said they would hear such a case in May or June."

It actually helps the legitimacy of the court if they pay lip service to the law as written before they strike it down.

2. Forgive me I am ignorant
What does the law say about Gay marriage? I was under the impression that there was an equality clause. Under what justification did they put a stay? And who had standing to ask for such a stay?
