BBV - Florida result glitch
Well here's one for Glenda Hood in Florida.

According to the results spreadsheet at enight.dos.state.fl.us, downloaded at 7:50PMcst Escambia County reported 4828 votes for Carol Moseley Braun with zero votes for any other candidate. The same spreadsheet downloaded at 9:20PMcst shows her total dropping to 333 votes with a plausable distribution of votes for other candidates. (Of course, these are *unofficial* results....)

An isolated case? Probably. A computer glitch? Maybe. Still doesn't explain why it happened though, does it? Where in the system did the glitch occur? How many other glitches were there?

Only once one looks into the isolated cases and the computer glitches does one find that electronic 'faith based' voting isn't as perfect as Ms. Hood would have us believe. All of her talk of Mr. Wexler and others '...doing a dis-service to the voters...' appears to be hollow rhetoric.

Perhaps she thinks that the voters can be easily HOOD-winked.

you sneaky bastard, Andy. Could that be why their talking points are identical?

In fact, (hint hint) could it be that various counties are "represented" by people who are paid for by the vendors and in turn the vendors are calling their own investment in PR firms (who, remember, identify themselves as representing THE COUNTY) -- with the vendors saying this is part of their "public education" portion of the contract with the county and seeking REIMBURSEMENT UNDER HAVA MONIES?

Oh geez. What a racket. And, me being a PR person, why didn't I think of that? Yoo-hoo...Paranoid Pat...is this part of the RICO dance? Can nostamj include it in his new review?

Cough Cough. I think I have something stuck in my head now.

12. Catch R. Doug Lewis doing the RICO twist in Vanity Fair:
He says, basically, don't blame me, don't look at me, it's not our fault, no one was helping us, and The Election Center has nothing to do with any of this any more.

hack-hack Except that R. Douggie, from what I've heard, plans to be getting a cushy position in the new HAVA bureaucratic setup.

Don't look here, he says.

Sorry, we're looking straight at you folks. Wait, here's a gray room with a metal table and a bright light shining in your eyes. What did you say, again?

Just what The Election Center does since he is a member. I said it certainly appeared they were working to help out the vendors of E-Voting machines more than the voters. He has not answered me and I am not holding my breath.

3. And another 'glitch' - Bay County
.... now recounting by hand !!
At least they have something to recount, and doing it by hand is the ONLY way to do it.

It'll be interesting to see what the cause actually was - improperly printed ballots or a software glitch.

Bay County uses ES&S Model 100 precinct scanner along with a Model 650 scanner for absentee ballots.

http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040310/NEWS/40310002/1060
** snip
That Florida Panhandle county suspended its count when U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt - who dropped out of the race two months ago and polled about 1 percent elsewhere in the state - took a 2-to-1 lead over with almost two-thirds of the county's precincts tabulated.
** snip
County elections officials said the problem happened because coding on the ballots was printed incorrectly. A hand recount of the ballots was to resume Wednesday morning.

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/politics/8146414.htm
** snip
County elections officials believe the problem was caused by a computer software glitch in the optical scan machines that counted almost all of the 19,000 votes cast. On optical scan machines, voters use pencils to mark their ballots, which are then tabulated by a scanner. Bay officials were going to recount the ballots by hand.

4. How about this one in Texas - scanner/ballot printing trouble
First you print the ballots.....
- candidate Mike Warren's name is not on some ballots
- candidate Norman Terry's first name appears as "Norma" on some ballots
. snip

Then you REPRINT the ballots....
The technician concludes that a line underneath the ovals on the ballots was printed too close, causing the machine to count the line as a vote.
. snip

Then you REPRINT the ballots, AGAIN
....the bar code along the left side of the ballot doesn't extend far enough down the page to count all candidates or doesn't match up with corresponding ovals. On other ballots, officials in the county clerk's office say the paper quality is different.
. snip

http://athensreview.com/articles/2004/03/10/news/news14.txt

Then you say 'so much for technology' and you hand count the &%^$&^$ ballots, (which is what they should have done in the first place.)

16. Another scanner problem in Texas
Bexar County
Now, read the quotes below. Notice anything wacky about this?
The scanner was feeding back inaccurate information. They updated the files. (Is that anything like a last minute software change?)

"Officials say the problem was with a scanner designated to count the 3,000 mail in ballots for this election."

"They say the scanner was feeding back inaccurate information, so officials had to shut down the system and update the files."

""We ran them the first time. We ran them the second time, they were one vote, two votes off — just in about three different races," Elections Administrator Cliff Borofsky explains. "

25. Yet ANOTHER scanner problem in Texas....
At this rate Texas is gonna need their own thread !!
ZAPATA County

"The drama surrounding the already spirited race was amplified by election night woes in Zapata County, the southernmost county in the district. Some optical scan equipment broke down and 3,600 ballots had to be counted by hand — a task that took 13 hours to complete."
snip
"A faulty computer chip was blamed for the counting delay. "
snip
".... a dozen advanced-placement students from Zapata High School came to help."
snip

Hmmm..Just like at home - when technology fails, call in the high school kids to help. Maybe they're on to something here. Rather than using machines, maybe give high school kids an activity-based lesson in democracy, by having them count the voter verified paper ballots.
