Ugly
U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown verbally attacked a top Bush administration official during a briefing on the Haiti crisis Wednesday, calling the President's policy on the beleaguered nation "racist" and his representatives "a bunch of white men." Her outburst was directed at Assistant Secretary of State Roger Noriega during a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill. Noriega, a Mexican-American, is the State Department's top official for Latin America.

<snip>

Brown sat directly across the table from Noriega and yelled into a microphone. Her comments sent a hush over the hourlong meeting, which was attended by about 30 people, including several members of Congress and Bush administration officials.

Noriega later told Brown: "As a Mexican-American, I deeply resent being called a racist and branded a white man," according to three participants.

Brown then told him "you all look alike to me," the participants said.

Now, if any of you have watched CSPAN, you know that Corrine Brown is perhaps the most unintelligent member of Congress. This is just embarrassing. If a white member of Congress had said to a black person, "you all look the same to me," he or she would be forced to resign. It's that simple.

11. And I guess all blacks are criminals too right?
That makes about as much sense as your comment.

4. This is all part of the Freeperization of our politics. Dems guilty too
It's only getting uglier and uglier. Rush Limbaugh set this tone of hatred in the late 80s and Ken Starr perfected the art. The fact that some liberals are acting like morons too now is hardly surprising. The world has gone crazy.

:eyes: Thank God we at least have a president who's a uniter, not a divider and can set a better example than those Democrats who don't even care about the safety of the American people!! more :eyes:

6. Huh?
She says, "you all look alike to me" -- a statement that could just as easily have come from a Klansman's mouth -- and you say "good for her"?? Blech.

7. The Black Caucus is Unanimously united for aiding Haiti and Aristide
The people causing the problems in Haiti are white and rich. Aristide is Black and the majority of the people are black. Aristide was elected by over 70% majority vote. White rich people don't think black people know how to govern so they feel they need to take over. Aristide is a highly educated man who speaks six languages fluently. He has not abused his authority in any manner. No huge Palaces no huge Armies No WMDs only thing he has done is ask the wealthy to pay more than they think they should pay. So they staged a coup.

8. Okay.
First, this has nothing to do with Corrine Brown's racist remarks.

Second, I think your description of the unrest in Haiti right now bears little resemblance to the truth. Do you have any links to support your suggestion that the coup is taking place at the behest of rich, white Haitians?

15. She Should Be Dismissed or Resign
She should be shit-canned...but only if she won't do the honorable thing and resign first.

Too bad this is what the opponents of acting to assist Haiti will point to when they talk about those of us who would seek to help the Haitian people.

17. Locking
Rules to start discussion threads in the General Discussion forum.

1. If you start a thread in the General Discussion forum, you must present your opinion in a manner that is not inflammatory, which respects differences in opinion, and which is likely to lead to respectful discussion rather than flaming. Some examples of things which should generally be avoided are: unnecessarily hot rhetoric, nicknames for prominent Democrats or their supporters, broad-brush statements about groups of people, single-sentence "drive-by" thread topics, etc.

2. The subject line of a discussion thread must accurately reflect the actual content of the message.

3. The subject line of a discussion thread may not include profanity or swear words, even if words or letters are replaced by asterisks, dashes, or abbreviations.

4. The subject line and the entire text of the message which starts the thread may not include excessive capitalization, or excessive punctuation.

5. If you post an article or other published content which is from a conservative source or which expresses a traditionally conservative viewpoint, you must state your opinion about the piece and/or the issues it raises.

6. You may not start a new discussion thread in order to continue a current or recent flame war from another thread. The moderators have the authority to lock threads in order to contain flaming on a particular topic to only one thread at a time.

7. Discussion topics about the Democratic presidential primary are not permitted in the General Discussion forum, and instead must be posted in the General Discussion: 2004 Primary forum. Passing references to the Democratic primary candidates are permitted, provided that the overall topic of discussion is not directly related to the presidential primary or the primary candidates.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,
DU moderator
