Republicans start to sense a 'sweep' - Scary.
http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0729/p02s02-uspo.html

As Republicans fix their eyes on the 2004 election, there is a growing sense that their party may be facing a set of opportunities not seen in years.

Not only are they heading into a presidential cycle with a popular incumbent and a sizable fund-raising advantage over any opponent, but the GOP also looks to be in a strong position to expand its majorities in the US Senate and House.

If Republicans are able to pull off across-the-board wins, the outcome could transform the nation's politics. Coming on the heels of the 2002 elections - which gave Republicans outright control of both chambers of Congress and the White House - a wholesale victory in 2004 would solidify the GOP's status as the governing party in Washington, and allow it to leave a clearly defined mark on the policy landscape.

23. No, they are not
The fact that Kerry and Dean are the frontrunners right now is one more reason that they could easily do much, much better than 88.

They are basing this on the best campaign network of polls and technology of any candidate ever. Not on nostalgia and wishful thinking as many here are basing there campaign hopes on.

I was hoping that they'd be overconfident and then fucked themselves over, but that doesn't necessarily appear to be the case. I mean, are they raising that much money because they are nervous, or are they doing it in case Bush's situation gets really bad and he has to work to get reelected?

Other states will see similar sweeps, as befitting the more-difficult methodologies pioneered in 2000 and 2002.

Bush is no Reagan. Lots of Democrats personally liked Reagan. Dems especially especially progressives and activists detest Bush. his re-elect numbers even at the height of his power in the polls have been mediocre. The Dems will win in 2004 and we will also take back the Senate by holding senate seats in Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina and winning GOP seats in Pennsylvania, Alaska, Illinois, Missouri, and Colorado. You heard it here first.

While we still have power in the government to do so. If we don't expose them now we are toast. The DLC plan to stay under the radar won't work this time. Bush has so many negatives to exploit it's ridiculous and the DLC plan makes it seem as if Democrats agree with Bush's mistakes.

Remember, they have the media, the money and a whole bunch of brainwashed followers who are unable to reason for themselves.

18. I think they need to get their heads out of their collective asses...
And take a good look at this country.

It's going down the crapper and their majority is going to go down with it. This is the same old Repuke crap where if they say something enough times, it will become reality. I AM SO SICK OF THAT BS!

I read today that the refinance bubble is pricked and thus there goes the housing bubble. Well based on the massive amount of "For Rent" signs in my community, I'd said a lot of people are in a lot of hurt already. Either they've bought a new house and can't sell the old so are forced to rent, or the landlords can't find renters due to the horrible economy.

Where I work at, we sit every day and wait for the annoucement of more layoffs. They laid off half our office last year and the rest of us are like the walking dead, waiting for the ax to fall. We are a publicly traded company and our stock has been down pretty consistently the last few weeks so to me that just adds to the anxiety.

Of well, enough of the rant. I'm off to work my SECOND job. Which by the way, I NEVER had to do during the Clinton years. Seems like back in the good ole days, a person could get by just working ONE job. Anyone else remember that?

The presidential election will be close, while the GOP will only pick up a few seats in the House and Senate. Since 2006 looks much better for the Democrats, the GOP has wishful thinking in the midterm. And if we believe Judis and Texiera on the rise of the ideopolis, the GOP is screwed demographically in the longterm (end of the decade).

Bush ran around during the election (yeah, I know "election"...what a hoot) with a highly presidential-esque jacket on, emblem that looked like a presdidential seal from afar spouting about how America "is just gon'na love Laura as the 1st Lady..."

It is all a psychic implant. It is all subliminal. Only lemmings truly fall for it. Granted...while re-publicans do have the lemming gene cornered it is nevertheless still just a mind fuck ~

In the absence of a free press it may be thus but their positions will not stand on their own. They need their hate radio. Their csmonitor, their Limbaugh, their wsjournal...

You have to decide what is more importent; changing the tide on the broad stroke or some sideline issues that most of America doesn't want to think about. Both positions are valid, only one position unseats Bush.

It's your decision.

48. Senate
Of the three two-year Senate cycles, this one is by far the most favorable to the Republicans, so they need to make hay this time.

Two years from now there will be more Republican seats at risk, and four years from now too, so in a way, I can see why they may be optimistic.

Veto-proof senate? Not even close. They may pick up 2-3 seats which would be real good for them, but would be far from veto proof, especially with senators life Chafee, Snowe, Specter, Collins.

The south could be a real opportunity for the Repblicans. It is possible that they may pick up seats in N Carolina (Edwards), S Carolina (Hollings), Georgia (Zell), and Florida (Graham). That's a lot of pick-ups in one region.

I really don't have any idea of what's ahead in House races, but the last 8-10 years have seen swings of only a half dozen seats or so each election. I don't know if there's a reason why this one should be different.

52. over on FR they're talking about a filibuster proof majority
basically they think Boy George will get a second term (in a 40+ state landslide) and they'll pick up 9 seats and thus be able to cram any right wing wacko in that they want.'

won't happen of course, most of them also seem to talk about how Daschle is DEFINATELY going to lose (pipe dream) or that Dorgan will definately lose since Bush carried the state by almost 30 points (they clearly have never been to North Dakota if they think Dorgan is vulnerable). The basic sentiment seems to be Bush's coattails will lead to a 1994 type sweep. What they're forgetting is not only is Bush not going to win in a landslide if he even does at all, but even that doesn't guarantee a sweep. The Dems picked up 2 Senate seats in 1984.

There are other links on this, but it sure is interesting how one's psychology can be affected by what one reads.

If you read (and buy) the CSM piece, you'd give up.

If you read (and buy) the idea that Dean is taking it to bush in Texas, then you realize they are in for a real fight. And that goes whether you like Dean or one of the other Dems.
