In the Crossfire… the hot-button issue of the moment and a pivotal debate in this election year promises to be gay marriage. San Francisco continues to provide marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples as California's governor charges the city is in clear violation of the law. Yet, this isn't just a west coast issue. The Massachusetts Supreme Court says that gay marriage is a right protected under its constitution, while several other states are making moves to prevent any of this from happening.
President Bush has indicated that if necessary he supports an amendment to the U.S. Constitution defining marriage as between only a man and a woman. If passed, that would be the law of the land. Recent polls suggest that the majority of Americans oppose gay marriage and would support a constitutional amendment to thwart the practice. So, in an election year, what fallout will this issue have on the campaign trail?
Can Democratic presidential candidates find safe ground on which to stand? Will Bush's support of an amendment turn off moderates and independents? What about conservatives who believe the president isn't going far enough? Should the issue be left up to the states? If so, should the federal government recognize those unions? And does San Francisco's controversial move ultimately threaten the gay rights movement?
