Congressman Is Challenged by His Ex-Wife

<SAN ANTONIO -- A tornado of media coverage has descended on the race for Texas's 20th Congressional District, training its full might and fury on a divorced San Antonio marriage counselor with no staff, no experience in electoral politics and a campaign war chest of $150

No matter that Whetstone, 45, a former advice columnist, does not have a chance of winning the race, according to political analysts here. What has ignited the firestorm of interest in her candidacy is a spectacle whose script, for all appearances, seems tailor-made for daytime television: an allegedly wronged woman bent on exposing her powerful husband and bringing him down -- or at the very least humiliating him in public.

In a flurry of interviews and national television appearances, Whetstone has painted Gonzalez as a control freak who dislikes children and pets, a spendthrift who cannot manage his own financial affairs and a bully with an explosive temper.

She says she will divulge even more in a forthcoming book, tentatively titled "The Congressman's Wife." But she insists that revenge is the furthest thing from her mind. >

I know because I interned for the Congressman last summer and he was not a bully nor did he scream or throw temper tantrums. Every week, his office would get harassed via phone calls from her. We'd have to put her on hold, and then get the Congressman on the phone.

I have interned for Charlie last summer, he was nothing like what the newspaper article described him. He is not a spendthrift---he is frugal. He doesn't scream or bully people around. This woman is lying through her teeth for money.

what this woman is saying is FALSE. I have never seen anything like temper tantrums out of the Congressman, and he loves his son. I have close friends of the Gonzalez family that are ashamed of this woman's antics.

I repeat again, what she is saying is FALSE. I feel so sorry for Charlie that he has to go through this.

9. It's disgusting how she profitted off his divorce

It's why the Congressman refuses to date anyone now. I asked him earlier last summer if he was married and he grimaced before he said he was divorced. I asked him if he was dating anyone and he said that he definitely was planning not to.

I can completely back up what you, GOPisEvil, are saying and what Slinkerwink is saying. I've heard the same from people who know them both. Apparently a lot of people tried to warn him *before* they got married.
My one encounter with her three years ago left me shaking my head at how unbelievably crazy-rude she was.

15. All I can say

is Becky is one to complain about Charlie supposedly being a "womanizer," considering how she got her claws into him. They met at his birthday party, which was planned by my friend, who was going out with him at the time. I'm not letting Charlie off the hook for that, but Becky claiming he's a womanizer is like the pot calling the kettle black.

I also remember her column in the SA paper & her comments about her ex.

17. I don't about the son, but his dad was one HELLUVA congressman!

His dad was Henry B. Gonzalez, a giant for decades; he worked in Congress for the working man and the Hispanics in San Antonio. He stood up for me personally, when I needed him.

So if the son is like the dad, he will be easily re-elected

21. Henry B. Gonzalez was one of the best Congressmen ever....

and I'm very proud to have known him and intern for his son last summer. Charlie Gonzalez's a lot more liberal than his father who was a traditional Texas Democrat.
