WASHINGTON, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Goodbye hanging chads, hello electronic
voting. The security challenges posed by electronic voting is one of many
topics that will be explored at the 12th annual USENIX Security Symposium,
http://www.usenix.org/events/sec03 / , to be held here, August 4-8.
The five-day USENIX Security Symposium tackles a range of security issues
including preventing and detecting intrusions, ensuring WiFi security, new
challenges with 802.11 and SSL, new directions in Trusted Computing and the
realities of site responsiveness to new security patches.
....
Electronic voting and the security requirements and mechanisms for
managing U.S. national elections will be examined by a panel of academic
experts, government election specialists and voting system manufacturers.

Hey Diebold might be there ...

1. Oh my god a USENIX link on DU!
My wife's on the board. Don't think she's going to the DC conference though, more's the pity. But she did go to San Antonio, where Neal Stephenson was the guest speaker--he autographed my copy of Snow Crash.

Cool about this though--I'll have to ask her to probe her sources and get the temperature of the USENIX community on this....

REFEREED PAPERS
PANEL: ELECTRONIC VOTING
Moderator: Dan Wallach, Rice University

The U.S. national elections in 2000 demonstrated numerous problems with punch-card voting systems. Many states are replacing such systems with new, computerized ones. Most of these record and tally the votes completely in software, which raises concerns if the software is either simply buggy or has been subjected to malicious tampering. Hundreds of computer scientists signed a petition demanding that these machines have a "voter-verifiable audit trail." Academic experts, government election specialists, and voting system manufacturers will discuss security requirements and mechanisms for managing our elections.

5. USENIX folks are top notch
I belonged to USENIX for a while --

They have BOF sessions (Birds of Feather) in the evenings, and I'll bet they'd *love* to hear a mini-presentation on the black-box voting investigation and what you have to share.
