Kulongoski Outlines Oregon Budget Cuts
"On Wednesday, the governor outlined the budget cuts that vote will bring. In a Capitol news conference the morning after voters overturned the Legislature’s $1.2 billion tax package, Gov. Ted Kulongoski said he wants to spare state crime labs and some health-care benefits from the automatic cuts triggered by Tuesday’s election. But he said major cuts will stand to public schools, colleges, health coverage for 50,000 low-income adults and other programs.

EDIT

Likely cuts

Some of the $545 million in state budget cuts likely resulting from Measure 30’s defeat:

State aid to public schools, Education Service Districts, $299 million

Remove nearly 50,000 low-income adults off state health coverage, $37 million

Eliminate selected health care services for other low-income adults

Oregon University System, $7.5 million ($563,701 for Western Oregon University, $1.8 million for University of Oregon and $2.1 million to Oregon State University)

Community colleges, $6.8 million ($813,211 for Chemeketa Community College)

Adult psychiatric-care hospitals, $12 million

Children and family programs, $4.8 million (includes Healthy Start, college students’ day care, crisis nurseries)

State prison system, $6.8 million

State court system, $13 million

Attorneys for low-income defendants, $9.9 million

District attorneys, $762,440."

2. This is going to be painful
Both my job and my wife's rely on state funding--for education and the arts. Oh man, we're screwed.

The jails aren't going to be able to hold criminals for long, and a lot more mentally ill people will be forced onto the street. College tuitions are going to rise yet again, and our public schools will have to cut even more days from the school year.

On the up side, Oregon's wealthy can buy a fleet of tax deductible Hummers with their tax "relief" windfalls.
