Electronic voting favored by majority of Georgians
By Brian Basinger
Morris News Service

ATLANTA - Georgians overwhelmingly prefer the state's new electronic voting machines over other methods of casting ballots, according to a poll released Tuesday.

Researchers at the University of Georgia found 70 percent of respondents are most comfortable voting on the computer touch screens, which made their debut during the gubernatorial election in November 2002.

Using a pen to mark a paper ballot was cited by 12 percent of respondents as their favorite way to vote, while 8 percent still prefer punch cards.

The poll, conducted by UGA's Carl Vinson Institute of Government, included 807 telephone interviews of randomly selected adults between Nov. 16 and Nov. 23, 2003, and has a margin of error of 3.5 percent.

1. Like sheep to the slaughter.
They have no idea how dangerous those machines are.

Democracy in the United States ends with a whimper.

3. Were the 'poll' totals done by a Diebold computer??

Were the poll 'results' tallied by a Diebold computer that NO ONE is allowed to check??

... Just asking.

4. This just means they haven't been educated

Thus the importance of getting TV coverage.

At the request of CBS lawyers, I'm preparing a package of the dept. of corrections documents on the felons who have been affiliated with Diebold and its predecessor. You know, the ones mentioned by Paul Krugman in his recent New York Times editorial. It's about time Georgians learned about them, right?

I know, I've not been posting much, but with me, stuff happening behind the scenes is inversely proportional to time spent posting on DU. Watch for a story that's going to hit -- was supposed to be Monday, then supposed to be Wednesday, it's moving along getting better by the day. Stay tuned. When imminent, I'll post a thread here.

When that story hits, you'll get a taste of what's in store for Georgia. The people aren't being led like lambs, they're just not being informed. You watch. The low rumble is growing louder.

What can YOU do? Please, we need to keep spreading the word. Tell three people.

New fodder for discussion, as always, is available at http://www.blackboxvoting.org.

9. RDL agrees educate them.
"Buying new voting systems won't fix most of what caused the problems in this election," said R. Doug Lewis, executive director of the Election Center, a Houston-based nonprofit association of state and local election officials. "We're going to have to work on policies; we're going to have to work on procedures; and we're going to have to educate voters."

7. Anybody
need anymore proof that either americans are so stupid that it is amazing any can walk and talk at the same time or that these polls are rigged. I admit I must lean towards the first explanation.

8. A fellow translator voting in the recall in California
was all excited about how "cool" the touch screen machines were. She changed her tuen when I mentioned some of the drawbacks.

Despite the widespread use of computers, I think there's little knowledge of how they work. Thanks to a programming course 20 years ago (which I've never actually USED), I can think of at least two algorithms for cheating in an election, but your average American just sees a computer as a kind of magic box. They don't sit around wondering about how it works any more than they sit around wondering how their TV works.

11. If a democrat won in a landslide there...
they would be marching on the precincts and dashing the machines to the ground.
