I'll give this to Bush

Bush has ZERO substance. But he's an expert at delivery.

Pelosi and Daschle simply don't have the same personable speaking style as George Bush. I wish John Edwards was giving the response.

I like what these two are saying, but they are boring me to death.

1. If Pelosi and Daschle had canned standing ovations after every sentence...
they wouldn't seem boring at all. And without the canned ovations, Bush would look more like a comedy routine.

8. He should be. He is a puppet.
He started practicing the speech before Christmas. His job is to read the speech written for him. I will give him credit for keeping a straight face when he himself knows the crap coming from his mouth. Of course a wooden puppet always keeps a straight face.

38. i disagree. he always seems about to laugh
at himself, at the congress for buying it.

he has a half smile at the end of his applause lines, as it he's pleased he made it through that paragraph.

i can't tell if its a smug smirk or he's got a private joke or what.

I beg to differ. He can't pronounce words correctly, he slurs words and smirks too much!!!

11. Let me qualify

When he is speaking on a script, he's brilliant. You may think that mis-pronunciation is bad. But most people mispronounce words. It makes him seem "folksy" and "down-home".

To be clear, I'm not buying. But I can appreciate his salesmanship.

BTW, I have noticed that Howard Dean has a tendency to stammer a bit at times. Does this make him a poor speaker???? What comes through is that Dean, unlike Pelosi, actually has a pulse. There is energy and direction pulsing through him. He shows it.

Microsoft Reader voice could have given a more effective delivery than Daschle and Pelosi.

Please don't fall into the trap of thinking that everything on YOUR team is good. And everything on THEIR team is bad. It's not the way mature people conduct discourse.

The speaker for MY team SUCKED tonight. Bush was his usual colloquial, personable, disarming self. He was effective and likely will woo a lot of fence sitters. Pelosi and Daschle helped push them over.

12. I don't buy into that.
He doesn't seem down-home to me. He seems uneducated. I agree however that Pelosi and Daschle were awful. I wanted to slap that fake smile off of her face. What I want is passionate intelligent speaking. Not b.s.

Bush was horrible! He was smirky and arrogant. I think Daschle did a nice job. Thanks for spelling out how to act mature-I really didn't know...My team was OK. They were SOOO much better than bush.

29. Sorry. He just sounds ignorant and ill-mannered.
Please don't buy into the media whore's analyses of his brilliant delivery. It's 100% pure horseshit. Do you really think this is the sound of a statesman? Or is it the sound of a third rate bar-room blowhard?

33. I'm NOT

Like I said, I'm not buying. And I don't care what media people say about him. Rather I look at his style. And I appreciate that the guy is a genuine charmer. Most serial murderers are good charmers. It doesn't make them good people.

Furthermore. The President is right about one thing. We did "misunderestimate" him. He is a savage political animal and has a real skill in this area. He sucks at policy. He's in it for his own sense of privelege and self importance.

The president is NOT dumb. He's an asshole. There is a difference. The easiest way to lose to an opponent is to disrespect their abilities.

Slurred words. This is NOT an orator. Some of you need to remember a REAL speaker -- somebody like John Kennedy, or Dr. King, or (dare I say it) BILL CLINTON!!

but they need to pretend that they're alive a little better. Daschle's section could have been a lot more powerful had he been more animated; he actually had some pretty damaging things to say.

22. And THAT is the point...........
though I will always find it really difficult to believe that anyone who has made it through high school can be happy that this guy is the President of the United States of America.

He seems like a personable guy, but for crying out loud, it's so obvious that he's in way over his head.

32. WHY does he seem like a personable guy?? Everybody keeps
repeating it as though it's true. He is invariably rude, irritable, smirking and nasty EVERY time he is in public. He acts as though he is calling you a dullard if you don't swallow his nonsense and people fall for the media lie of him being personable? I've known all sorts of personable people and they certainly do not behave as arrogantly and rudely as this man does.

Why belive the propaganda when it is so obviously the opposite of the truth?

35. Don't be a homer!!!

Yet, he still beats EVERY Democrat in opinion polls. I'll grant you that the media helps him out. But everybody who meets him comes back and says that he's an affable fellow.

Do not "misunderestimate" this guy. We did it before and he beat us (not fairly, but he's president). You've been spending all your time among fellow liberals, or screaming at conservatives.

I guess I'm uniquely situated here in Indiana. I can get the skinny on WHY people like Bush from the people around me. I try to understand. I'm not trying to justify it.

Over half of America likes this guy. It's not because they are dumb. He's an excellent salesman. He's the antithesis of the Dilbert-esque Gore who has tons of substance.

Your inability to acknowledge Bush's strengths in salesmanship leads to an inability to beat him. Try to understand. Yes, I hate the man too. But there is a reason why so many people voted for him.

23. Oh please
he "mispronunciated" half of the words with more than two syllables, he stumbled over a sentence a dozen time at least, and could barely contain his smirk most of the time. He's no more of a good public speaker than he is a "Great Leader".

25. SOTU is an easier delivery than the response.
The applause lines provide natural breaking, so it doesn't seem so long; while the response was continuous which really requires a much better speaker, IMHO.

He's completely shameless. I'd say he's a good liar, but he's not. People who believe him are just incredibly gullible and incapable of critical thought. It takes everything I have to sit and watch him for 5 minutes, much less 45 or however long that took. Ugh! I'm in the worst mood now.

He has an arrogant little smirk, flaring nostrils and tiny beady eyes that dart all over the place while he's busy mispronunciating. And what about that reptilian tongue that he flicks out when he takes that annoying pause after every 4th word.
