Iraq reconstruction contracts on offer at fair

A massive Iraq reconstruction fair to be attended by as many as 1,450 firms from 46 countries opens on Monday under the shadow of the massive Baghdad truck bombing which killed 25 people and wounded scores more.

Contracts worth billions of dollars are expected to be signed at the "Rebuild Iraq 2004" showcase being organised by Kuwaiti and Saudi businessmen.

Twenty-five countries will be officially represented, with hundreds of companies coming from 21 other countries, Dhari al-Eiban, the director of the exhibition told AFP.

Two US heavyweights heavily involved in the Iraq reconstruction effort - Bechtel and Kellog Brown and Root (KBR), a subsidiary of giant Halliburton, are both taking part, Mr Eiban said.

The exhibition, which runs until January 23, will be opened by the emirate's Commerce and Industry Minister Abdullah al-Taweel, representing Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah.
