Racism trumps Patriotism in Florida
Somehow I missed this article from yesterday:

Lyles memorial toppled

FORT PIERCE -- Vandals could be behind the recent toppling of a statue of CeeCee Lyles, a public works official said Friday.

The statue came off its perch in the Liberty Garden on Jan. 2 and was picked up by police the next day. It was dedicated on Nov. 26 in memory of Lyles, a former Fort Pierce police officer and flight attendant on United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

(snip)

Lorne Lyles, CeeCee Lyles' husband, said he would prefer not to think that someone would intentionally knock the statue down. Lyles said he was in town during the weekend the statue fell.

"It was light. It could have blown down," he said.

...Went through the article, and what was not mentioned is what is readily apparent to any who knew of CeeCee, or have seen her picture:

Apparently some are still not ready for the possibility of black heroes....

2. I'm not inclined to call it racism
I think it is probably just a bunch of kids having fun. I know when I was younger, I, along with friends, would deface statues and egg homes. It was nothing personal...my friends and i thought it would be funny. Vandalism happens, it has always happened and always will happen. Fortunately, we grow up and stop that kind of behaviour (for the most part).

Now, if there had been racist remarks spray painted nearby, I'd probably agree it was racism.

3. You could be right
Devoid of racial remarks, this is probably just vandalism.
