One of the best quotes I've seen...
Have been looking up quotes by conservatives that go diametrically opposite to Bush's current administration...while doing so, I saw this...I think that it is perfect in todays scare-easy days...

"They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety."
--Benjamin Franklin

what are your favorite quotes...and what are you favorite quotes by conservatives?

Here is one of mine:

"I believe in a graduated income tax on big fortunes and a graduated inheritance tax on big fortunes, properly safeguarded against evasion and increasing rapidly in amount with the size of the estate (Theodore Roosevelt, 1910)."

2. I wasn't saying that Franklin was...
however, Roosevelt was a conservative, though certainly not in today's mold...

3. Roosevelt was a Republican and then a Bull Moose
He was never a Conservative. At least not in the meaning that is given today.

4. ok
Roosevelt was a republican, but that was before the ideological shift of the two parties in the 20s and 30s. His nature conservancy, pro-worker, anti-trust work etc, makes him far more liberal than most republicans I can think of. His latin american policy was abysmal, that's absolutely true, but he did win a peace prize for his intervention in the Japanese-Russian war.

5. I've got two: One to throw right at the holier-than-thou fundamentalists
“When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door,
and pray to your Father in secret.” --Matthew 6:16.

That one's for all the Ashcrofts and bushes and reagans of the world who want to make sure they're seen praying and bowing their heads and closing their eyes before God. Pharisees, all.

AND THIS ONE: It's a doozy and it really catches people offguard:

"What luck for the rulers that men do not think." -Adolf Hitler

My daughter floored her entire 8th grade class with this one, last year. Stumped 'em, teacher included, on who said it. She said they all gasped when she told 'em.

6. Here's a few for you. . . .
Edited on Sun Jan-18-04 02:49 PM by ET Awful
EDIT: OOPS, I didn't notice you wanted them from conservative soruces. . . . SORRY!!! (They're still great ones though).

EDIT AGAIN TO ADD LINCOLN QUOTE:

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." - Abraham Lincoln (who the Republicans love to claim as their own).

"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism, since it is the merger of state and corporate power." - Benito Mussolini

"I will make a bargin with the Republicans. If they stop telling
lies about Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them." -Adlai Stevenson

"Why of course the people don't want war. But it is the leaders who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
- Hermann Goerring

"This war is a defensive war. It was forced upon us by our enemies, who wish to destroy our nation. The only thing we cannot afford to lose in this war is our freedom, the foundation of our life and our future. No one has the right to complain about limitations on his personal freedom caused by the war."
- Joseph Goebbels

8. Some of my KEEPERS
Don't know in every case their political leanings, but here are some of my favs:

"We must guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism, especially that patriotism which is the last refuge of scoundrels and which is so prevalent, so professional and so well paid nowadays. Eternal vigilance must become more than the slogan for small associations desperately fighting almost overwhelming cases of infringements on individual liberties.

"We must realize that those who use red-baiting to attack every liberal and democratic movement today, are the armed cutthroats of reactionary Fascism tomorrow.

"Two facts emerge from any study of European turmoil and the new class alignment in our own land. The enemy is always the Right. Fascism and Reaction inevitably attack. They have won against disunion. They will fail if we unite." ~George Seldes, "You Can't Do That" 1938

"It is going to take a lot more than a Chicken Hawk holding a turkey to fix the morale problems in Iraq."-- Mick Youther

"The saving of our world from pending doom will come, not through the complacent adjustment of the conforming majority, but through the creative maladjustment of a nonconforming minority." ~Martin Luther King, Jr., 1963

"Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices." - Voltaire, 1767.

"It is hard to fight an enemy who has outposts in your head." – Sally Kempton

"The more we do to you, the less you seem to believe we are doing it." -- Dr. Joseph Mengele

"When all think alike, no one is thinking very much." -- Walter Lippmann

"History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon." – Napoleon Bonaparte

"It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning." -- Henry Ford

"Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious" -- George Orwell, 1984

"You take the blue pill the story ends - you wake up in your bed and believe, whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland, and I show you just how deep the rabbit hole goes." – Morpheus, in The Matrix

9. can you believe Ronald Reagan said
this???

"History teaches that war begins when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap --- ---Ronald Reagan"

and how can W reconcile his 'admiration' for Teddy when Teddy would have told him:

To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. ---Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

and a few other gems:

During times of war, hatred becomes quite respectable, even though it has to masquerade often under the guise of patriotism---Howard Thurman

We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office ---Aesop

We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people---John F. Kennedy

When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it? --- Eleanor Roosevelt
