MY hat in the RING??? ATTN DUers: I NEED your input
I now reside in my hometown, and it is the literal BUCKLE of the Rust Belt, Youngstown, OH... I have hosted talk radio here and been an active Dem all my life.

We have a bizarre situation in our county commissioners race. The sitting Dem is NOT running for reelection, and the Dem Party here has almost evaporated. Our longtime Dem Party boss was unseated in the early 90's by a group called Dems for Change, a Repug funded operation but a legal coup...

Four dems are running for the seat. None are anything worth voting for, lots of baggage, etc. This is Jim Traficant's district, we play FULL contact politics!

The repug running for the seat has started a vendetta against me in the media, complaining to the Board of Elections that I was NOT REGISTERED VOTER when I voted and circulated petitions for other dems in this primary.

I am being URGED by several long time politicos and members of the county sheriff's dept run run as an INDEPENDENT in the general election... Should I do it???

I'm a KNOWN D, and the Indy label just might bring enough young votes to win!

This is a VERY complex election, and I could USE your input, my friends...

For a LIVE look at the situation, feel free to check into this 'splinter' Dems message board. I post as "Amerika."

http://www.dems17.org/board.htm

PLEASE GIVE ME ANY AND ALL INPUT!!!

Rick Myers
possible Independent Candidate
Mahoning County Comissioner

Can't win if you don't play.

Any chance to publicize the ideas of DU etc will help wherever you are politicking

3. The question is, do you want to run?
If you do, if you think you can do some good by running and (hopefully) winning, go for it.

If we let every proposed obstacle get in our way, we'd never get anywhere. And you are being urged to run, so that's encouraging.

Thanks for asking our feedback, Rick! And don't forget to wear your hip-waders while you're out politicking.

I DO want to run. I know the enemy, and they are savage. If you check the message board mentioned above you will see it is a FULL CONTACT game here in Da' Valley.

Ya know what we call The Sopranos here in Youngstown?

Home movies!!!

;)

I have been divorced for 12 years, no kids. So I am free to do this without involving too many innocents!!!

5. Do it. Run a guerilla campaign and take no prisoners.
They hit you with a rock? Hit back with a howitzer.

Just please, oh please, don't use the word "Change" in your campaign...

8. Change is a BAD word here, brother!!!
I've got the full support of the former Dem party chairman. 30 years in control, he has photos of himself with Truman, JFK and Scoop Jackson! If I do this, I am IN PLAY!!! Had lunsh with him and his council yesterday. HE believes for the first time in 30+ years an I could WIN!

There is a major personnel/political situation in the Sheriff's office! The sheriff and 3 top guys are under FEDERAL investigation. Four sitting city council members are being investigated for a phony LAND deal downtown...

The D running for sheriff AND his people are BEHIND ME...

Dammit... I could actually have a shot here!!!

15. You're right!!!
This is STILL my country...

I can tell you that the R's in town are pooping themselves...

I call this area "Bosnia on the Mahoning," for the Mahoning River. There are NO parties here anymore, just factions, like Iraq or Afganastan. This area feels that the rest of the country has left them behind.

Take a peak at the website mentioned above... It's insane.

36. I said COUNTY
But you heard COUNTRY - that's where your head's at. You're a patriot.

This is a great nation. Take it back! County by county.

Not everyone has the skills and assets to pull this off. If you are so blessed, then you have a moral obligation. Stand up!

19. Go, Rick! Be Proactive!
that's my resolution for this year. I will deal with whatever problems arise from being assertive and irritating later, but it's important to DO IT!

Especially in your situation, where people you trust are urging you to. You won't be alone (ideally) or acting inappropriately. Of course I don't know your exact situation, so I'm just talking hypothetically.

Personally I'm sick of hanging back out of fear of unknown social situations or shyness or whatever--I regret the things I didn't do much more than any embarrassing thing that ever happened because I acted out of turn or ungracefully.

Just take it slowly and in large enough parcels that you can handle it.

22. This is tough
Try to get your contacts in a row. It may be a good idea to go independent to get away from the politics as usual genre. I may seem like a traitor here, but you may want to consult with the Green Party. They may if nothing else, give you some insight toward your endeavor. If you say the Republicans control both parties in your area have nothing to lose, only to gain.

There is no question that you must run for the seat. You da best man, right? Besides, what do you have to lose? And you'll always have DU to turn to when ya need.

Running as an I is in no way going against being a Dem. So don't let that stop ya.

Looking forward to hearing how your campaign works out. Keep us posted, Rick.

27. Here's the story of the move
I was a happy Hoosier, I was actually a mod here when my brother-in-law died suddenly. My dad has Alzheimer's and my mom doesn't drive, so I was called to help out...

So I'm here in Youngstown, Ohio...

And I miss Indy... Will be visiting next week for a day or so...

37. Go For It Rick....
Given the choices we have for the March 2nd primary this year, and Rick's dedicated determination to to make changes that have been swept away for decades, he has my full, devoted support. In fact, should Mr. Myers decide to run, I have already offered him assistance in helping with his campaign. I am currently a retired Deputy Sheriff from Mahoning County, who has seen the politikal corruption first hand. Many county office holders need to be held accountable for their actions, and more often than not, their inactions. I have found Rick to be an educated person with a vision to lead this county in the right direction. The reparation will not occur overnight, but it needs to start A.S.A.P.

and denounce both parties as being out of touch with middle america and let them say you're a liar to your face. Dare them! to say it!

When they do, you've got'em by the short hairs to make your point. And make it painful and make it stick.
