December 10, 2004
One of the persistent ideas from the recent presidential election was
that a Bush administration would treat the U.S. military better than a
Democratic John Kerry administration.
Republicans, a tired old notion asserts, simply relate better to
things military. But if this administration is an "ally" to the
military, we'd hate to see how an antagonist behaved.
The president heartily endorsed Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
for a second term: "He has proven himself a strong and capable
leader."
Less than a week later, Rumsfeld stood before troops in Kuwait and
imperiously batted away their concerns about being poorly equipped,
paid late and forced into extended service.
