Sly, Condi & Charlie Sykes

"The best case that Charlie Sykes and his ilk can make for Rice is that she is a victim. The "Aunt Jemima" controversy helps them divert attention away from the real debate that ought to going on about this indefensible nominee."

Editorial: Sly, Condi & Charlie Sykes

November 21, 2004

Milwaukee talk radio personality Charlie Sykes, who has raised whining to a high art, is doing his best to stir up a national controversy over a remark made by Madison talk radio personality John "Sly" Sylvester.

Sykes, who made a lucrative career for himself by playing up conservative complaints about campus "speech codes" and "political correctness," has suddenly decided to be offended by the fact that Slyvester referred to National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice as "an Aunt Jemima" because "her price of admission to the White House is being subservient."

Is Sykes really concerned about Sylvester's controversial choice of words?

Nothing in Sykes' record would suggest that. In fact, he's long been a critic of so-called "language police.".....
