'Fahrenheit 9/11' draws applause at campus showing

Wednesday, October 6, 2004

By: BRUCE KAUFFMAN - Staff Writer

SAN MARCOS ---- The first showing of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" at Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday night was greeted with applause, one week before the filmmaker's scheduled appearance in North County.

A crowd of some 125 filled about half the seats at Arts 240, the largest lecture hall on campus. Their applause stopped abruptly as a frame came up right after the end, dedicating the film to those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America and those from Moore's hometown of Flint, Mich., who have died since in military service in Iraq.

One member of the audience, Joshua Lugan, a junior business major, had a special interest in the film. On Sept. 27, he learned he would soon ship out to Iraq as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
